BBQ sauce
BBQ sauce
I am craving some BBQ!
I saw different kinds of BBQ sauce starting to come out in the stores -- around here at least they only seem to have them in the summer.
Which ones have you guys tried and what would you recommend? Are there any good ones out there that might satisy my craving? Any to avoid?
How about the Santa Maria American BBQ spice-is it good?
Thanks!

Re: BBQ sauce
Went to a Mex function this evening where the table was filled with Santa Maria articles for such a spread.
Confiirmed my previous conclusion that Santa Maria is phony overpriced CRAP!

Re: BBQ sauce
I am a big BBQ sauce fan and I have to order mine from the US because I have not found any local brand to be nearly as good. You can go to those stores that sell american brand stuff if you are craving it bad enough. They are expensive but at least you get some good quality stuff. People might find it funny, but I buy mine from eBay
Many of the sellers' shipping is a little overpriced for Finland but you can find people willing to send at the correct prices. I just had 9 bottles shipped over, it was a little over 5 kilos for 20 USD. The per bottle price including shipping came out to be about 4.10€. I've ordered many different kinds but this time I got Jack Daniel's BBQ sauces, 3 different kinds. They are good.

It's of course not the cheapest but its a heck of a lot cheaper than the imported sauces that you can get here. Behnfords sells some Jim Beam BBQ sauces for 8.90€. I had noticed one time there that the "sell before" date had passed so I tried to bargain them down. They came down 1€ and wouldn't budge after that. I told them that they can't even really sell it anymore after that date but they didn't care, so I didn't buy.
Another brand I recommend strongly if ordering from the US is Famous Dave's. Its awesome.

I have been making my own BBQ sauce. I got a couple of recipes on some cooking sites and made my own tweaks. I must say that the most recent batch was pretty decent. It really isn't that difficult. And you can change it to what your tastes are.

Re: BBQ sauce
Agreed. I can't really see buying ready sauce. The possibilities for own 'secret/fun recipes' are just too great. And you can nicely leave out all the strange additives and preservatives. It's so easy to freeze small amounts.
The bulk of these products is water, tomato, vinegar, sugar in some form. Hardly makes sense to DHL them around the world. Also not very eco-friendly to leave those carbon tracks.

Re: BBQ sauce
Well I guess if you are that eco-minded that you make your own to save the environment, I take my hat off to you (well and also even if you don't do it for the environment, thats cool). Maybe I can then come over and help you decide which is the best recipe
I have to admit that I haven't ever taken the time to try making my own so I don't know how it would turn out. Maybe I'll give it a shot at some point this summer. I've sure been satisfied with all the different kinds that I have been ordering though and have a good supply. I'm sorry to say that I'm not the type to be so worried about the environment that I wouldn't dare order anything from outside Finland, then I probably wouldn't be grilling either. Think of the carbon tracks from that

Well at least they don't change their brand name all the timewattypiper wrote:Went to a Mex function this evening where the table was filled with Santa Maria articles for such a spread.

Be as it may, I haven't been too happy with them either, the few times I've tried some. Making your own is usually what I resort to, then again I do not have much opportunities to BBQ so it's very occasional

Re: BBQ sauce
Thanks for the replies! So it seems no chance to get a good one here in Rauma unless I order from somewhere. I do have liquid smoke so I could make my own. Any recipe recommendations you could share?

Re: BBQ sauce
One could probably, exercising due diligence, leave away liquid smoke:

Think the brand is called PIG for Pain Is Good.

Re: BBQ sauce
I picked up a bottle of Bull's Eye at Stockmann. Other than that, I make my own with Liquid Smoke using the recipe I sent you. Thanks for reminding me to pick up a few bottles of the LS while I'm here.
Re: BBQ sauce
I was craving BBQ sauce.
THEN: I had too much rhubarb and was surfing the net and found this recipe. http://www.gourmet.com/recipes/diaryofa ... rb_chutney Whipped some up and wohoo, no more BBQ sauce cravings. Who would have thought! It has just the right amount of acidity, spices etc to be suitable. And no MSG!
