You can ski

Theres a bus Rovaniemi-Kilpisjärvi-Tromsa... runs... a couple times a day? Rovaniemi bus depot would have timetables.
Cheers, Hank W.

Yep... if hiring a car, or hitching a ride is not an option, you probably will need to take a bus. See the timetable searches at: http://www.matkahuolto.fi/en/

Well, I don't think anyone who wants to go to Lapland (or to fell/mountain/desert areas anywhere in the world) is "crazy" - depends on what one is looking for. It's ages since I last went there but I used to go hiking in Northern Sweden, mostly in the Abisko / Kebnekaise areas. It's a bit more "mountain-like" there, as you can see from this picture... most of the fells in Finnish Lapland are rather far away from the main ridge/massive of the "Scandinavian Mountains", so they are somewhat different. I haven't visited Kilpisjärvi myself at all - nor Saariselkä or Kittilä... :? Should perhaps plan a trip one of these days... or what do you think? (click to enlarge)

Btw those are not my pics, just random ones from the net *sigh* :D

...but I do love those northern landscapes....so dynamic, always changing, never looks the same for very long... Ephemeral...just like all life... :)

There's a Canadian publication, Canadian Georgraphic, which typically has excellent photographs of northern landscapes and northern subject matter...I don't subscribe, but if I see a paticularly appealing issue on the magazine racks, I'll buy it...the last one I bought had some stunning photographs of the Mackenzie Delta Sep/Oct 2007...this link only gives a hint of what the magazine actually had...

I like the tropics, too, for short visits...but those northern landscapes are far more intriguing to me...for several years in the mid 80s I had one wall of my bedroom papered with a sweeping Alaskan river valley scene...I think it was the Yukon River in early fall... :)

...and I once spent a memorable three or four days swatting mosquitoes along the Babbage River...in the very northern part of the Yukon....and it was actually right at this time of year...twenty-four hours of daylight...and bits of ice were still just barely clinging to the edges of the river and the little lakes...:)

I came back from Sodankylä last week and with all what you guys say here it makes want to spend some days up in the north again. I also like the northern landscapes, I guess all the places in Lapland have to be beautiful in winter too. I almost picture the white fresh snow giving light to the long nights. A kind of feeling of midnight blue is even warm. =)
Hop and go and then come back, post the pictures and tell the experience.
