Reputation and quality of education at Evtek (Metropolia)

Post by wildclaw » Sun Jun 29, 2008 2:02 am

I have read many posts about the reputation of the "nowheremäki" polytechnics (as some people calls them), and it seems like it's a widely shared idea on this board that the programmes offered at these schools are bullsh*t and that they only hire low-ranked students who can't get into the sacro-sanct universities in their own country. (Well, I have been myself to university for one semester in my own country and to be honest, it was enough to get an idea of the job perspectives after graduation : less than 20 hours of lectures per week, students wouldn't even come to all of them ...)

So that's why I'd be really glad to hear more about the reputation of engineering degrees (B.Eng and M.Eng) delivered at Evtek (or Metropolia if you prefer) :

- when seeking a job, both in Finland and in other EU countries.

- when applying to Masters and PhD, then again, both in finnish and other european universities and colleges. And in that case, is the reputation of the school an important factor, or is the student admission only determined with the grades he obtained?

Is the bad reputation of finnish polytechnics justified when it comes to Evtek?
Is it a reality in finnish (I precise, cause I haven't read similar statements about any other EU country's polytechnics ...) polytechnics in general, or is it rather some kind of elitist bullsh*t idea?

And please argument! Give concrete facts and examples. If all you have to say is something like "I have heard and seen how horrible these colleges are!! You really dont know until you go there yourself specially that Haaga-Helia!!!!!!!!!!!!" (yeah yeah, I really quoted that one from this forum ^^) don't even bother posting ...

For my own experience, I can say that on the paper I got to inform me of my admission to Evtek for the next year, the lowest score admittance (understand, the lowest grade a student admitted to this programme got, i.e. the grade of the lowest student on the list) was 15 over 100 (IIRC 14 is eliminatory) ... Indeed, I have to admit that I can barely figure out how someone who got only 15% will make it in an engineering programme! (Or am I wrong? But as far as I know, engineers are supposed to be rather good students.)

Well, if you ask the university clowns the polytechnics are vocational schools ;)

It doesn't depend on the school itself alone rather than the department as well. Some departments have a long and unique history dating back to the original vocational colleges while some are hashed up with various success. Then the different schools which may have similar programmes have a bit of a different "taste" in the approach, but so do the universities.

At least currently in Finland you can forget applying to universities with polytechnic degrees. They look at them even more funny than foreign degrees.

May be that is the reason EvTek and stadia merged to form the Metropolia university of applied science. http://www.metropolia.fi/en , to boost their reputation and standards.

I have seen couple of international degrees (in english ) offered at Metropolia. I am not sure about those courses. If someone has some view on that it will be helpfull.
