Second Residence Permit

Hi everybody,

What are the steps to follow to get the second residence permit? -if that's how they call it.
Who has experience in renewing the residence permit? What do they ask for, etc, etc?

Nothing much...just fill up the form again accompanied by 2 passport size photos...and fork out a fee of €120...well I have the A resident permit and had applied it on the basis of family ties initially...they just called to confirm if i would like to have it extended for 3 years after which i would be entitled for a permanent resident permit...

We just applied for our extended (second) residence permits. Submitted the same forms as the first (initial) residence permit, photos, and 120 euro each. Drop all docuemtns off at the Immigration Police.

How long before your permit exprires you have to apply for the second permit?
Can you get the forms online?
The immigration police in Malmi is the only one receiving the applications?
Do you have to present other documents or just the application and passport?

The first time was such a torture that I would like this time to be a little bit less stressing.

Is one month before enough time?
Where online?
I don't even remember what papers they asked before?

My work situation has changed too. Oh, too stressful for a Saturday afternoon!

we were foolish and applied the week before. technically, as long as you apply before your current / existing residence permit expires, you are fine. however, if you want to be able to leave the country at any time, you should apply well in advance. we were told that it could take 6 months to process our applications. a colleauge of my fiance's just got his extended permit and his applicaiton took something like four months (with a request to expedite his application).

yes. and you should fill them out before you go to the immigration police. all of the forms are available via http://www.migri.fi/netcomm/content.asp?article=1991. it should be the same forms you filled out the first time.

if you are in helsinki, yes. i don't know about other parts of finland. but, i think if you check out the website for immigration, it should provide details on where and to whom to give the aplication.

we took everything that we had to give them the first time: housing registry, rental contract for our flat in helsinki, proof of our relationship, my fiance's employment contract, and our letters from the magistrate with our social identity numbers on them. and then we also took passport photos and both of our passports (both of us have new passports so we took our old and new passports, just in case).

when we applied the first time for my residence permit (which is based on family ties to a non-EU citizen), we had to submit a lot of supplementary materials that we didn't have when we origianlly submitted my application. we simply gathered everything and then took it in later.

The first time was such a torture that I would like this time to be a little bit less stressing.

could not agree more. this time was still stressful, but less so. we had to wait a long while at Malmi for our turn in the queue, and afterwards we felt like we had run a marathon. the first time, both of us were in tears at various times. this second time, we weren't. we actually had *some* fun. but, it wasn't fun.

My wife applied about 2 months before her permit expired and it took 3 months to receive her second permit, also when she applied they only asked for the application form, photos and 120e fee nothing else, they have all your previous details of papers etc from your first application in their archives. You only need to fill up the application for a residence permit not the family ties form. You can print this from the UVI page.

I see there are two forms, one for second or extended permit and another one for permanent permit.
What is the difference? When do you apply for the permanent permit?

According to my logic, -not always theirs, if you plan to stay in Finland for more than two years it makes more sense to apply for a permanent permit.

Also, my work situation changed in the sense that now I have a toiminimi and work as a freelancer. That's why I wonder if they ask for other papers.

my understanding is that you first get a one-year residence permit; then, you apply for an extended residence permit. after that, you may apply for a permanent. the extended permit is good for three or four years (can't remember).

i can't answer your question about freelancing. i would suspect that you would have to submit additional documents; but, i have no idea. i'm here b/c my fiance is here.

In summary:
1. Applying for the first residence permit (valid for 1 year) -mine expires in September.
2. Applying for an extended residence permit (valid for 3 or 4 years) -should be done sometime this month according to what you guys have said.
3. Applying for a permanent residence permit or citizenship if I remember correctly. That's after 4 years of living permanently in Finland.

Yep, I also suspect I probably have to submit additional documents, maybe copy of the toiminimi, freelance card, maybe letter from my landlord, -I'm just guessing.

Go to www.migri.fi click in english then application forms, the form you need is OLE 1 you can read and print out the form. It's the same form for extended, permanent permits, you just tick the box for extended permit. As far as I can see they do not ask about your employment there and if you look at the top of the form in the official use boxes it says about your previous documents in there archives so they have a lot of info from your first application. And of course your address details are in the computer at the helsinki register office where you registered in the population register.
Your next permit will be for 4 years, when you apply next time you apply for permanent permit. I would apply as soon as possible if your permit expires in september.

As for number 2 - I would not recommend holding your breath. It can take upwards of 5-6 months for them to process depending upon how busy they are. I speak from experience on this one. Helsinki is notoriously S-L-O-W in processing because of the sheer volume of applications (the largest concentration of foreigners live in the Helsinki area). However - the minute you submit your application for your extended permit, you are still legal to stay (even if you submit it on the last day of your existing permit) while they process the app.
