A Stout Question

Post by Karhunkoski » Wed Jul 09, 2008 4:58 pm

For drinkers of Guinness, Murphy's and other stouts...

has anyone tried any of the 10 or so porters that Alko has to offer?

Opinions? Recommendations?

I tried Fuller's and Saaremaa. Both drinkable, but I was not impressed.

Aldaris Porteris is my husband's favourite, good and cheap(!).

It was sold out some time ago, but I have not checked the status during past two of weeks or so, though.

Koff Portteri IV B
0,33 l
000067 • 4,97 €/l
Over roasted for me + nearly burnt flavour, unpleasant (7.2%)

Ridgeway Foreign Export Stout
0,56 l
7,04 €/l
Smooth, honey flavours, flavour disguises its strength (8%)

priki - I bought a bottle of Aldaris a couple of hours ago, pass the good news to your husband!

It's still in the fridge! :D I tried the ones above yesterday, and after the 8% monster I didn't want to waste the subtle flavours of the Aldaris

I think I might try it tomorrow night.

Ach, shoot!

A thousand apologies, I totally forgot!

Yup, I did drink it in the end and it was a clear winner in my small survey.

But I have to admit that Guiness and Murphy's remain my favourites.

I agree. A few pints is always in order before a jam. I once tried a porter from Tampere at Kaisla in Helsinki, and to me anyway it tasted like what Guiness used to. Excellent.

I hadn't realised Guinness had changed its recipe?

I don't think so. But I remember Guinness having a more "burnt" taste years ago, while today the taste will still great is somewhat more "tame". It was when I tasted the porter from Tampere, my first thought was that this was the way Guinness tasted years ago. You know what........I'm going to pop down to the local bar and see what Guinness tastes like today! :)
