Name change procedure

You will receive a new KELA card automatically, usually within a few days of the wedding (unless you have a KELA card with a photo, that one you have to renew yourself and pay for it).
Banks receive the notification of a name change automatically, but I believe you must apply for new cards yourself (and pay for them as if you lost the previous ones), although this may differ from bank to bank. Passport and driver's licence you must renew yourself (and pay for them). I would suggest getting the important ones sorted out, then waiting maybe 4-6 weeks to see what else gets changed automatically, then notify the rest yourself. After all, it's not the end of the world if you use the Plussa card with your old name for a month.

I think there was a thread about this before. A south American lady (Chile, Peru???) had some problems because her embassy refused to change her passport into her husband's name. IIRC in Finland the ID/resident permit must be in the same name as the passport.

BTW, you don't have to change your name, but I guess you know that! I kept mine, it was easier and I wasn't bothered about not having the same name as my kids.

Drivers licence is one what wouldnt change automaticly, my sister just laughed on her licence. Its still with her maiden name and shes been married over 6 years

I guess she can't use her driver's license as proof of identity with a credit card, for example.

Drivers licence is not valid way to prove your identity, only passport or identify card are (thats by law, other ways can be accepted), And yes she used drivers licence and it was accepted (shops can decide what they accept, same first name, woman in marriage age etc.). Of course it will be a problem but atleast police didnt mind, identify number was more important than name. They said she should change it tho.
If i as male change my surname that would be totally different story

well in principle "a document given by the police" is valid, so a drivers licence is and a KELA card is not - in different countries this is different - in Sweden the ID card is given by the banbks....

Was there some confusion about a Kela card being an identity card?

Well, run of the mill KELA card (at least when I got mine) did not have picture.

No picture, not valid.

Congratulations and remember to take that 1 year extension to your address change.

It's a wonder how much stuff finds it's way to your old address even after a month. I moved and since relative moved in to our old apartment did not have extension. He put stuff on pile and handed to me when I visited old stomping grounds.

Fortunately nothing urgent there.
