Hi
I am going to apply to go onto a Finnish language course (tyovoimakoulutus) as soon as my gf has moved into Helsinki but I have also been told the wait can be anything from 3 - 6 months, my query is can I work whilst I am waiting for the language course or will they say that I have found employment and take me out of the "queue", this is a real tricky one - I am assuming that I can find a part time job whilst I am waiting for the suitable course to come. The language course is most important and I don't want to risk it.
Anyone been in the same boat before?

Of course you can go to work,
There are a number of language courses available, first are you already living in Helsinki, because depending where you live is one factor in the waiting game. One course I took was based on first come first served, some people waited in line for 4 hours to guarantee a spot in the course so make sure you ask or even visit the school a couple days before the course begins. Another option and the wait is not as long is going with kesäyliopisto, this option which is a private school you pay for your course but then get your money back after the course is over, you have to take reciepts/course completion certificate to unemployment then they forward info to Kela and they pay you back. Another option is to go thru social services if you qualify they will advance you the money and take it out of your monthly stipend. Of all these options, I had to ask and ask again because some people are in the know while others aren't.
