Arctic Trout

Post by Kupcake » Sat Sep 27, 2008 11:52 pm

My husband had some arctic trout in a restaurant the other day and said it was great. Can anybody tell me what the label will say (in Finnish) at the fish shop window?

Don't you mean Arctic Char?

That delicious. It's called nieriä in Finnish, I think.

I think arctic trout is grayling (Thymallus arcticus), arctic charr is Salvelinus alpinus.

Grayling (harjus) is not a common fish to find in the stores and I think you'll be hard pressed to get it, unless someone is importing Thymallus arcticus. In the Helsinki Market Hall, at the harbor, there's a fish stall that's specialised in importing speciality fish, so they might know. Grayling that swim in Finnish waters, especially up north, is Thymallus thymallus (European grayling) and its very popular among recreational and sports fishermen, but like I said, not common at all in the stores.
