Job request related to surveying and GIS

Post by efttmx » Sun Dec 07, 2008 10:06 pm

Hello to all of you.
My name is John, I am 27 years old and I am Greek.
I have B.Sc. in surveying and M.Sc. in geomatics from the University of Gävle, Sweden.
I attended courses about surveying, cartography, highway engineering, GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing and cadastral.
In the M.Sc. programme, I attended the courses : GIS raster/vector, Cartography II, Remote Sensing, Spatial Planning and Modeling, GIT Project and GIS Science Seminar.
I have worked for 5 years in surveying, but I have never worked on GIS (on professional level).
I am subscriber to the magazine of ESRI Company “ArcWatch” and “ArcUser”. I have read the monthly articles and I believe that I have got practice with the help of the accompanied tutorials, in different aspects of GIS.
I do not speak Finnish, but I have the willing to learn the Finnish language.
I am interested to find a job related to ether in surveying or in GIS, in the metropolitan area of Helsinki.

Ystävällisin terveisin

In many of the surveying jobs that I have seen listed in Finland, they want you to be able to speak/read both Finnish and Swedish. For a long time, Swedish was the "legal" language of Finland. Because surveying has so much to do with "legal" descriptions of land and land transfer, you will need to speak both languages. There have been a few jobs listed for surveyors in Eurojoki but those are gone now. There is a job for an interpretor for surveying in Helsinki that was just listed. You could check that out, but again, it's all in Finnish and requires both Finnish and Swedish (legal stuff again).

Finland has a Geological survey that is far advanced in the world..
but then it is a closed circle...
I used to know someone who knows someone authoritative in that field..but then as I said, its a closed field and requires some digging into when I find time..

You could check with the Real Estate Center (Kiinteistöpalvelukeskus), They may have some openings for surveyors.
The Institute for Land Surveyors (Maanmittauslaitos) in Finland generally requires excellent language skills in Finnish, good language skills in Swedish and some language skills in English. Therefor, your best bet is with smaller entities which utilize surveyors.

..you could always set up shop and provide building surveying services...ie the type that the architect uses when building in a historical street so he needs drawings of the facades left and right of the site. This kind of work always struck me as needing a bit of expensive kit then dead easy - and the fees always seemed a bit high for what you get at the end (which always has a disclaimer roughly saying - it's a wild guess and you can't sue me)..
