Update: Internet Frustration. Speed upgraded but not working

Post by chickensexer » Tue Dec 09, 2008 12:53 pm

Hi All,

firsat of all I'll explain why I'm not posting it in Tea&Sympathy. Cuz I don't want to just rant. I'd like to hear your guys'n'gals' suggestions.

My internet provider is a smal, sort of a "family ran" company. Which is cute and all that and the question might be who cares who you are as long as your internet works. Well, true. But...

Most of the time I need nothing from them. My automatic monthly payment goes to them and I'm using my internet. But sometimes I do need some things from them and that's when it gets painful...

Ok, their Tech.Support/Customer service is just a cell phone number available 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. That's fine, I understand they are small company...

But why - if you'll manage to get someone answering the phone - things DON''T GET DONE???

Sometimes I had to face it when something "broke" in my internet and it took me a few days of trying to reach, asking to fix, seeing it’s not been fixed and then calling again. Sometimes. Not a big deal, really, although annoying.

Now I'm terribly frustrated.

I wanted to get certain things in my computer that requires speed 2MB. Unforunately, I lost my copy of the contract so I wasn't sure what my speed was. So, I called/SMS'd my internet provider asking to look up my contract and get back to me telling what the speed is. As well as send copy of my contract to my address.

It took me TWO WEEKS! Of caling, SMS'ing, reminding, calling, reminding, trying to reach and caling again. So, finally they did call me telling that my contract speed is 1MB. The copy hasn't been sent though I'm guessing. It's been already 4 weeks since I started trying to get it...

Now, 2 weeks ago I called them again and made a request to upgrade my speed to 2MB and mail me the new contract. This time I was smarter (I thought) and asked when it will be done. "Next week" they said. Ok, so the "next week" is "last week" by now, and STILL NOTHING! Yesterday I called them expressing being unhappy with that and explaining that I'm lusin money paing for that product subscription that requires 2MB and that I can't use cuz the internet people didn't keep they promise.

The guy on the phone seemes embarrassed and said "ok, ok, I'l doi it myself then, this afternoon!"

Needless to say - nothing happened.

The question is: now what?
I'm terribly annoyed, frustrated, angry. But I don't know what to do!! :(

I would've long dropped this service and gotten another one but other are either unavailable in my area or offer only very high speed, expensive packages, that I don't need.

P.S. I've faced same problems with my condo's plumbers (gave up after 3 tries and now live with permanent leakage), furniture/ appliance deliveries and post delivery.

Change ISP. Really. If I remember right, you had homePNA connection? Even if you get your connection upgraded to 2Megs, your apartment building might have some crappy adsl that is shared to all other PNA customers.

Yes, change ISP.
It sounds like a drowning company.
They promise everything to keep the customer, but the have no means any more to fulfil their promises.

Sorry guys but what is ISP?

And I'm not even sure if I have HomePNA or ADSL... And I can't even think about trying to contact them again to find that out.

Internet Service Provider. The company you pay to get connected to internet. Look at your modem, does it say anywhere adsl, dsl, pna, etc.?

Large company is no guarantee of good service.

Granted it was almost 5 years ago, but in my previous apartment, it took over 5 months for Sonera to install broadband to our building.

When I moved apartments I went for DNA, I signed up, collected the modem from them and the connection was up and running within 2 hours.

As I said I can't change internet provider. Other's are eiter unavailable or have only very high speeds available, which I don't need.

My modem says "2WIRE" or sth like that. And also "Broadlink" next to one of the lights on it. I plug it into a phone cable socket in the wall. I think it's ADSL but I don't know. On the company's website it says "HomePNA tai ADSL". So I guess either one is available although I don't know what's the relation bewteen them...

So, you basically suggest to give up? Is there anything that can make people WORK and DO AS THEY SAY?

Stop paying them. You have a contract now for 2M connection, that you aren't getting, so I believe that you can stop paying and let them chase you up for money. And when they do tell them that they have breached the terms of your contract.

Money is the great motivator for business. As long as you keep paying, they assume that you're satisfied with their service.

AFAIK you can only withhold part if you are only getting part of the service. If you are paying for 2mb and are getting one, you may withhold half of your payment, not all. Legally that is.

In that case I'd suggest withholding more as you could probably argue that the customer service is part of the price and you're not getting any of that either... But I'm a troublemaker, and want to make them work to get money.

Tell your internet provider, that you are not going to pay for 1/2.
Ask them to send you new contract!!
If they have email and you know it, send email to them explaining everything in detail ( their website will then give you a contact email), and sms logs, then save them.
Complain to Consumer ombudsman..
Write a letter to That company and include copy to consumer ombudsman..Stop paying the bill.

A new ISP will be your future if I estimate the situation correct.

- they don't give the service you want/pay for
- they have no working costumer service
- not paying (part of) the bill will get you into more trouble/even less service

so you either accept the situation and wait till they go bankrupt or you change the company now.

Complaining as Raamv said will give you a moral victory, but since they seem to be unable to provide the service, it won't solve your problems.
