Tesol + English degree = work?
Hi everyone.
Well, I didn't get too many responses last time so I'm going to try and keep it simpler this time around. Can anyone evaluate my chances of finding teaching work in Helsinki with a Tesol qualification and an English Studies degree (2/1)? I plan to come to Finland later in the year and some information from Finland would be most useful.
Thanks.

"English teacher" in schools in Finland generally has a masters degree in English philology and a minor in pedagogy. As for adult education, we all speak it already... well lets say the demand isn't that huge as in some other places. If you however know some other language people here are looking to study, then your chances actually may be greater in finding a job with that...

If you want to teach in "college" or "high school" then you will have a rather difficult time finding employment. If you are willing to "freelance" and do a lot of extra work for very little money then there are often a lot of job prospects out there. It's quite possible that you won't be satisfied with living and (trying) to work in Finland.

+ the fact if you get hired as an unqualified teacher you're only hiring asset is "native speaker"

Actually, it's "your", not "you're".Pursuivant wrote:+ the fact if you get hired as an unqualified teacher you're only hiring asset is "native speaker"

However, as I realise you KNOW this Hank, and as this was most likely a case of simply not paying attention, I'll let it go. This time.

Gosh, I just love correcting people. Maybe that's why I'm teaching English for a company that pays me quite a nice wage in a position I secured with the very relevant (ah em) qualification of a Bachelor of Fine Arts and no teaching experience or certification whatsoever.
Or maybe it was just my abundant and inherent charm.

If you're going to be obnoxiously correcting people's English all the time, might as well get paid for it.
Point is, anything is possible. Don't give up.

Well thanks for your responses. I'll have to think of something else I can do. Maybe I'll go to Uganda and be a dictator, I hear there's a vacancy....
