Can a pregnant women be laidoff

Post by sanam_bl » Mon Mar 02, 2009 11:04 am

Hi,

I had a query, I want to know if a pregnant women can be laidoff in Finland?
I heard from friends that the company cannot layoff pregnant women but i am not sure if it is true or not.
Is there any website or department from whom i can get this information.
Information regarding this will be very helpful.

Thanks and Regards,
Sanam

What is the difference between laying off a pregnant woman and laying off the husband of a pregnant woman? Why should one have any more "rights" than the other? In todays economy, you keep the people who can keep the company alive. times are tough all over!

Relax a bit now!

What the OP is probably talking about is the right of a woman not to get fired just because she is pregnant. If you suspect that you are being fired because of something like that, you should definitely talk to your workers´ union about it. They may help to fight the illegal work termination for you. The problem is that it can be hard to prove that you were fired because of the pregnancy and not some other things.

You can't be laid off on the grounds of pregnancy, that would amount to discrimination. You can be laid off on the grounds of the economical situation of the company.

I know someone that this happened to in Finland - they sued big time.

Get sacked, then sue! Hurrah! Drinks on you.

This reminds me of one of the most bewildering official statements I've ever encountered, echoed in this article:

http://www.helsinki.fi/yliopistolehti/2 ... joitus.htm

Basically, some years back a certain company had 'terminated the contracts' of some of the employees who were on maternity leave... when criticised, the company spokeswomen said (in a quick free translation):

"it is definitely not a case of us laying these people off. Terminating their contracts merely means, that those on maternity leave can apply for positions either in the company or outside it. In fact, we are offering them an opportunity to rearrange their life situation."

Now Be Thankful...

Hahah....

"Well...you know there is an economic situation going on, so we are giving you the chance to get a better job and therefore life by sacking you"

"Oh thank you soooo much, thank you for allowing me the possibility to truely discover myself and fulfill me hopes and dreams"
