Does anyone know if there is any "clearing" in universities?

Post by Kylie » Wed Jun 17, 2009 2:01 pm

Hey

So I had some trouble getting hold of my college certificate in time to apply for a university/polytechnic course.
But in England where one hails from, we have a thing called "clearing", now I'm only explaining this because everyone I have said it to is like "huh?" ...Clearing is when there is still some places left after the initial application period, so they offer people the chance once again to apply later. I hope I explained this well.

So does anyone know if there are currently any universities/polytechnics (preferably in Helsinki or near) offering clearing at the moment. I only know of one at the moment and that's in Jyväskylä, which is a bit out of the way, so was hoping to find somewhere a bit nearer.

Thanks in advance!

There is no in-built equivalent of the UK "clearing" period in the admissions procedures of the Finnish universities http://www.universityadmissions.fi or polytechnics http://www.admissions.fi - however IIRC an institution may occasionally organise additional intakes IIRC, but as far as I know this is rare even with the domestic students i.e. Finnish-language programmes - not to mention the "international" ones.

If the universities / polytechnics do organise any application periods outside their regular application times, the info might only be available on the institutions' web sites - apparently e.g. the current application period of the Jyväskylä alternative (I suppose you mean that one) has not been entered by the UAS into this database.

They do it on situations where not enough students have applied or got through the required tests/interviews. To expect such situation in Helsinki is a laughing matter like this ->

Ta da I just checked the local polytechnics -> http://www.cou.fi/eng/

Forget about this happening in Helsinki.

I've seen that happen, as on some obscure polytechnics obscure courses there may be 30 places and 14 people applying, but usually any mainstream course theres 30 places and 140 if not 1400 people applying...

It seems that this year a number of universities of applied sciences have decided to organise additional application periods for programmes commencing in autumn 2009. You can find a list of them at http://www.admissions.fi/ > Application Practicalities > Additional Applications (scroll down past the information about applying in 2010).

And according to this :

http://www.minedu.fi/OPM/Tiedotteet/200 ... ml?lang=en

A joint application system for Finnish universities is in the pipeline.

The university reform will not change the position of the students in universities. The Universities Act provides for student unions, which are corporations under public law. All bachelor's and master's students belong to these unions.

As before, the universities themselves will be responsible for student admissions. A national joint application system will be devised for university admissions. In this connection, regulations will be specified to stipulate that a student cannot accept more than one entrant place in a university or polytechnic degree programme beginning in the same term.

Decree education continues to be free of charge. In addition, there will be a fixed-term trial of charging tuition fees to citizens of non-EU/EEA countries in master's programmes taught in foreign languages. The tuition fees are conditional on a scholarship scheme.

Well... it sort of exists already :) Note that the Ministry text refers to a national joint application system - which was just recently introduced - http://www.yliopistohaku.fi AFAIK it's basically only for applicants from Finland (even though it does seem to be available in English...)

If you are a foreign applicant, there's the University Admissions application system: http://www.universityadmissions.fi which, however, is not used by all universities... however IMO it is somewhat unclear whether you can apply or not at http://www.yliopistohaku.fi as an "international" applicant - if you ask me it's a bit of a mess in that sense. And the search function distantly reminds me of this nightmarish "search function" (Just for fun try the "In English" - option... look at the drop-down menus... what a joke ) (edit - just to add that the koulutusnetti service may be useful as such, if you know exactly what you're looking for, but I'm just wondering why it needs to have that "English" interface - when it really doesn't.)

For international students, the UAS thingy http://www.admissions.fi seems less complicated as regards when and how to apply... the national joint application for the UAS's is found at www.amkhaku.fi, and if you click on "degree programmes" on the front page it takes you to http://www.admissions.fi.

It is probably a secret code, which, when cracked, reveals the true message:

"the next application date is November"
