Social Sciences student to Uni. of Tampere

Post by Fronhait » Tue Sep 22, 2009 4:49 am

Hi, i just found out that I can start studying in University of Tampere in spring semester and i have loads of questions, but unfortunately not so many answers, so i accidentally found this forum and hope you can help me.
First of all - is it worth it?
Im thinking just about the studies - as I dont have my BA degree yet I suppose i cant take masters degree courses yet, so it leaves me with fewer choices (as im studying there only in the spring semester) I`m trying to schedule something to get the 30 ECTS with the courses im interested in. I am creative, still logically thinking person who would like to work some day in advertising, PR or journalism (so sorry, but the bio-chemestry for me doesnt seem interesting) and i would like to get some advice on courses that could be interesting for me in the 2010 spring semester (as it doesnt say much in the course information at the homepage) and is it at all worth all the trouble to go there (if i dont go, i can try to get to other universities in different countries next semester).
Second: As far as i know, i get 700euro scholarschip with the ERASMUS exchange project. Is it enough? I dont believe i could get a job there, as i dont speak Finnish nor Swedish, and i dont have so wealthy parents that could support me with money (and even if they were, at age 19 im just too proud to ask for it). I believe housing is quite expensive (the cost of accomodation in dorm in Latvia is around 70euros), still i dont have to own a flat on my own. Im quite social, and here right now I live in , what i believe you call "cell" with 2 other guys and its not so bad. Im not a real party-boy, but still i would like to have some spare money for clothes, books, postcards e.t.c. and I wouldnt like to live on eating potatoes for 6months in breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Third: Ive heard the Finns are quite intravert people - would it be hard to make contacts/frends/etc if im speaking only English? Im quite social, so id like to hang out with people there, but i really dont believe that many of them would speak Latvian.
Forth: Is that true that theres not much of beautiful girls there? (that wouldnt make a problem, as i value personalities way more than looks. Asking this just out of interest)
Fifth: Is Tampere beautiful as a city?

Not much more comes to mind right now, but im really worrying about the first two questions, so it really would like your support.
Also if anything else comes to mind that i should know, feel free to post it, ill be really happy, as i dont know almost anything at all about the Finland and the people there.

Have a nice day (:
