MScSS- Helsinki:: GPA, GRE, letters of recommendation, et c?

Post by Jayr » Mon Oct 12, 2009 9:26 am

Not that all of you may 'care', but a little background information. I am currently a freshman in college, and I have a degree plan that I am following to be accepted to a university after receiving my associates degree in physics. From there, I plan on minoring in astrology, concentrating on information about solar winds, the sun and sunspots, magnetospheres, ionospheres, et c. and hope to be accepted into Helsinki for their program in Space Science. I am working on securing a position for a water treatment plant internship for engineering; I hope this will build my credentials when I apply to Helsinki. I have held quite an interest in Finland due to their culture and my own behavior. As a hobby, I am an analog photographer that does my own developing and printing, interested in landscape, minimalism. I am quiet, keep mostly to myself; I loath small-talk and appreciate gppd in-depth conversation. I am studying Finnish in my free-time, and plan to take Finnish classes when I arrive. Oh, and I love drink.

[cont.] I am interested in seeing if work value is increased, decreased, or within the same quality in a welfare state . I am interesting in partaking in the Finnish culture, because from what I have read, it sounds like I would fit right in. :]
I thought I would share to encourage some responses and to show I am not wasting your time.

Anyway, according to the Helsinki webpage, admissions for a Master's Degree does NOT require an admissions test. They cite viewing transcripts. I sassume they take the GRE into consideration as well [see::other documents], but to realistically gain accpetance into the international program in space science, what GPA and GRE scores should I have? What ways can I increase my chances of acceptance, such as careers and relation of authors of letters of recommendation [employers, profs, congressmen, dean, family], research and work-related experiences, and extracurricular, and how much does this University value these mentioned? Any other ways to increase odds

[cont] of acceptance? Most, if not all, of the information pertaining to allocating to Finland for future studies I have found after dredging through the internet. This is, at the moment, the only information I cannot find. ANY help would be greatly appreciated! I hope to get my doctoral, eventually.

Edit:: Also, how are the women in Finland? :]

Do they really ask letters of recommendation? Usually they are not required for Master's level, possibly only for doctoral studies (in addition to a research proposal etc), not sure for that either. They or personal statements are not used in Finland in general, everything is based on quantitative data (your scores).

Regarding the GPA/GRE stuff, have you asked the university itself?
