Helsinki folks: Where do you ski?
Helsinki folks: Where do you ski?
I always used mski.fi to check out the trail conditions in Tampere, but I knew the routes beforehand.
I have seen some trails at the urheilupuisto near that godawful eyesore of a church around Leppävaara, but I was wondering if there's anything good close Lauttasaari, or somewhere along Länsiväylä.
Any tips?

Espoo tracks are on pages 10-11.
And then there's the sea, you can ski along the coast around Matinkyla, Haukilahti, Westend but I'm not sure if the ice is thick enough yet. There are beach cafés in Haukilahti and Matinkyla

So, if you have used mSki before, why not continue?

And you can also select the Espoo option there.
I haven't checked out the ice situation, but otherwise the skiing opportunities are wonderful (by Helsinki standards, that is). Enjoy!

If you have access to a car, Nuksio is great, and not too far. Otherwise, I agree with Penelope, I use Haukilahti a lot when it is cold enough and it's great there, and the beach cafe place is nice to pop into for a cuppa afterwards, nice view there too. As an aside it was one of the places I wanted to buy in, but they want upwards of 600k for a rivitalo!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lots of people skiing in the Pirkkola sports region as well (just east of northern Haaga), the forest there is lovely. I do my running there and there is quite a lot of good skiing tracks there.

Re: Helsinki folks: Where do you ski?
Just now there seem to be quite a lot of "prepared" ski tracks around, e.g. in the "Central Park" area i.e. keskuspuisto... maybe because there's quite a bit of snow on the ground - at least when you think of the past few years... shame on me I haven't really had skis on me feet since year n before Elvis - although people have occasionally given me friendly hints regarding some popular skiing destinations ("suksi v|ttuun")

Re: Helsinki folks: Where do you ski?
I guess the swamp is another good spot for skiing, Sammy -- at least several people have recommended it to me in the past.
Maybe we have some of the same acquaintances.

As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.

A touch off topic...
What about centres around your end? (for downhill/snowboarding).
Thinking of a good place for beginners...so some gentle slopes. With good facilities...(travelling remember).
I've checked the sites...but of course, every centre is 'the best in southern Finland, ideal for beginners and the advanced'. Any experiences?

I don't really know - but generally speaking, skiing slopes around here are rare, since... you know it's not the Netherlands but almostBubba Elvis XIV wrote:A touch off topic...

NB notice the difference between "cross-country skiing" and "downhill skiing"

Don´t know how good your Swedish is, but in Husis (Hufvudstadsbladet) today there is a nice map of the main cross-country skiing routes in Helsinki. It also shows how many kilometres of paths are in each part of town.

Re: Helsinki folks: Where do you ski?
Apparently there's some info on Skiing iin Helsinki on the pages of the Sports Department - in English, too
...also some maps here

Re: Helsinki folks: Where do you ski?
Kauniainen has a "downhill" ski slope, and it's actually not that bad...................would keep you in practice before you head off to the alps or whatever........
