Inexpensive Home Insurance

Post by ancicamila » Thu Jan 14, 2010 9:23 am

Hi All,

I am trying to find an inexpensive home insurance cover. I received quotes from IF and Nordea bank, but they were all over 200 euros.

Does anyone know of some insurance companies that would not charge that much?

Many thanks :D

It depends what your home is...

The main companies providing insurance are Tapiolo, Pohjola, IF and Nordea. In my experience the choice has been quite limited, they ask how big the apartment is and you pay based on that - I don't know what it's like for houses.

Once apon a time, when I was young, I had a "young persons" policy from Pohjola which had travel, personal and home insurance all bundled together - that was pretty cheap.

It gets a lot cheaper if you order all of your insurances with the same company... we have 9 or 10 policies (house, car, mortgage, kids, dog, etc) with Nordea and get a big discount... maybe this does not help you, but good for others to be reminded.
With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.

Depending on where you do your banking, you could probably get a better deal from Pohjola (if you have OP) or Tapiola (if you have Nordea, I think). Otherwise, I think it is quite standard prices (the deciding factors seem to be size of apt, which appliances you have, area, your age, security lock or not, etc). You might also consider that things may be cheaper if you order the insurance yourself online (I think Fennia had a nice internet discount a few years ago, not sure how it is now). And if you are any way getting some other kinds of insurance (accident, travel) I am sure you could discuss some kind of bundle.

Things have changed a lot..
Banking and Insurance dont mix..
Insurance of 1 vs Insurance for many uses ( Home, Life, etc ) gives discounts..
Were they close to €200 per year or month ?
If it is the former..IT IS CHEAP..
If it is the latter.. THen you are asking for something that carries LOW deductible, high coverage.
So ...More details would help

At least as an OP customer I get to use my "OP customer points" to pay for my Pohjola insurance, so sometimes they do mix.

Hi there!

I have a 55m2 apartment in Espoo near Otaniemi and Ingonord charged me 49 euros for the whole year with each item insured up to 1,500 EACH.

Thanks for all the replies.

It's an 85 sqm flat in Helsinki's Etu-Toolo (sorry, I don't have any of the finnish letters on my keyboard) and I was quoted little over 200 euros per year for an extensive cover which includes all sorts of different things, it's pretty much the widest possible cover there is.

Yesterday I also checked with Lahivakuutus and they quoted 170 euros per year for the same thing, so it's about 50 euros difference, but their widest cover will compensate you only up to 68,000 euros for all of your belongings in total.

I'll check with other companies and I'll deffinitely post what I found, in case other people might need the information too.

Thanks again :D

Not quite sure what you mean? My banking business is completely tied with my insurances, in fact the banking bonus covers the cost of the insurances. So they certainly mix nicely for me.

Hi all,

Banks tied to Insurance: E.g. my Sampo bank has tied up with IF to provide cheaper home insurance. Check with your bank, they are more than willing to help if you have a loan taken out with them.

Do also remember that you get extra bonus off if you are a union member. E.g. most of the insurance companies give you a discount based on your union membership.

Cheers.

If you absolutely need a wide coverage and want a low deductible, there's really no way around paying for it. Bear in mind that the insurance does not pay for replacing used goods with new ones, there's a formula for calculating the current value for different things (electronics, furniture... what have you), so unless you have some fairly expensive things in your possession (collections, expensive art work, etc. may be outside the coverage and require an insurance of their own as it is), the 68 000 euros goes a long way. The housing co-operative has an insurance for the building (and the apartment) itself.

There are many alternatives. I have one from Aktia bank, a new service they offer for Home insurance. costing me for a small flat 89 E per year.
