Perhoja Finland?

Post by ohemge » Sat Mar 20, 2010 9:28 am

sorry if this is the wrong section but I couldnt really find the exact place for this. Okay so, I was watching, who do you think you are the new show on abc or what ever, and so I pulled out some stuff on my family, I know that my great grandmother who used to live in Finland was born in Perhoja Finland but when I search it, nothing comes up, can anyone tell me where exactly it is on a map? I was doing some searching on her as well as her husband who moved from Finland just it doesn't say where he moved form. I even search ellisisland.org for ship listings and couldnt find much of anything, but if you know where this city is could you tell me?

There’s a small town called Perho (Finnish Wikipedia) (Google Maps) in central Finland, but I’ve never heard of “Perhoja”.

Assuming the name was spelled correctly it could be some little local village or the other, of course... but that sounds a bit dubious, too, as the name doesn’t come up in any searches.

It’s also possible it might be a place located in one of the areas that were formerly a part of Finland but ceded to the USSR in the aftermath of WW2.

well I'm about 99 percent sure its spelled correctly because its listed in a memorial book taken from her funeral which lists location's and family as such. I do know that she came to America as an indentured servant, Just not sure what the exact date was of her arrival. I was also thinking it could be a some what small town or village or a part of something that was once owned by Finland and inst currently owned anymore. It seems like a pretty hard place to find. Also would you know how common of a name Pojouja is? Also I believe that it wasnt long after that either her brothers or her son's left the country due to the war, and not wanting to fight one another.

Sorry, that seems like a dead end too. :( The surname search of Finnish Population Register Centre cannot find anyone with that name.

To be honest with you, it does not look like a (correctly-spelled) Finnish name. I could imagine it being “Pojola” or “Pojula” but not “Pojouja”... and those suggested hypothethical names don’t exist, either, according to the search. There is the name Pajula, though, which is fairly common.

That’s a good catch, theoretically speaking, but why would you ever need to refer to the name of your home town or village in plural?

(Perhola, instead of Perhoja, would be a plausible name for a place, and it’s also a surname. Can’t find such place on the map, though.)

There's a Perhola in Juva (Search for Perholantie on Google Maps), but it seems like one of those places where there perhaps was an inhabited house once.

As for "Pojouja", I suppose it could be Pajuoja? There are 97 people in Finland with that last name.

well I searched the town of Perho like mentioned above, they have a small population of 3000 something people, also they listed an email about questions and what not so I'll email them and maybe ask. also mile thanks for the fix on the name, Its hard to tell in this memory book because the font they uses looks really funny and the o's and a's kinda look alike. also how did you find out 97 people in findland have this same name?

It seems there are actually a number of roads called Perholantie and some are even marked as leading to (or through) a place called Perhola on the Fonecta.fi map service... even though the search function does not call them up directly by that name. Could be any one of them, I guess.

Good thinking. Yes, it could well be Pajuoja (which means “Willow Dike”, “Willow Ditch” or “Willow Trench”, in case the OP is wondering.)

He used the surname search of Finnish Population Register Centre – a web service to which I already linked in the above.

If you can get some kind of a confirmation that the name actually is what you/we suspect it is, you might find some of these sites useful for further research.

Alright I'll try searching through those, also I'm going to try and find the family tree my grandma had been working on it has tons of names and stuff so I'd be able to confirm it form that. thanks for the help so far.. Also I talked to a guy on face book who has the name Pajuoja he says his family came from vaasa, but he had a friend he talked to in finland who says that the name is very protected and the only way he knows of people with the name is born in or through marriage also he says his friend says most of the Pajuoja's are related, could be why the name isnt such a big name.

If the memory book is in blackletter or a handwritten derivative, then the letters might look something totally different. You wouldn't be able to scan a page?
