Exchange at Univ. of Tampere

Post by oboebssn » Fri Apr 22, 2011 11:02 am

Hello,

I am currently looking at doing an exchange program through ISEP at the University of Tampere. I would be mainly going for music anthropology, and so I was trying to find some more information about music at Tampere, but I'm having some trouble. Is there a music faculty or a school of music like there are in universities in the United States? Or do I need to find a private instructor if I want to take lessons while I'm in Tampere? If I have to do that, is there some page that I can visit that would help me do that? Or someone I could contact? It's important to me that I keep up my musical studies because after I return from Finland I will be going into graduate studies in music performance!

I also have a not-so-related question. Is there any place in the Tampere region that would offer courses on the Estonian language? I'm up for a challenge while I'm improving my Finnish and learning Swedish. :)

Kiitos!

AFAIK universities here do not teach music at all, with the exception of Sibelius academy in Helsinki (which teaches only the future musicians, singers, conductors etc.)

I wonder would they have something to offer for you: http://www.tampereenkonservatorio.fi/?lang=eng

I assume you’re aware of the Department of Music Anthropology in University of Tampere? There are also some degree programmes in music in Tampere University of Applied Sciences (which is not the same thing as University of Tampere.) Another place to look into would be Tampere Conservatoire.

See here for an overview on music education in Finland. The article is a bit outdated in some details but should give you a general idea on how things are arranged here with respect to music education. The page may take a while to load – please be patient. (The link actually leads to an archived copy of a page that is no longer available on the original website.)

Musiikinopetus.fi has more up-to-date information on the same subject but only in Finnish. You could try browsing the site via Google Translate.

Here’s a “Yellow Pages” list of institutes offering music education in Tampere.

You might also want to register at Muusikoiden.net, a popular discussion board for musicians, and post further questions there (in Finnish or English) – this way maybe getting in contact with locals who could provide you with more detailed answers to your questions. See here and here.

Some of them actually do, a bit. And universities of applied sciences (not to be confused with “classic” universities) also do their part. A step down from those (or a step up if you’re more interested in performing music than theorizing about it?) are the conservatoires and the general entry-level music institutes (musiikkiopisto).
