Hi all,

I'm a vegetarian and 14 weeks pregnant now. I was wondering if anyone knows any good maternal milk powder for vegetarian I can get in Helsinki as this is my first pregnancy? Thanks! :)

Well, I'm not vegetarian or pregnant, but... I went ??? about the "maternal milk powder"... and vegetarian milk powder??? So that might be some indication on the chances of finding anything like that here.

Had to google what the heck that was. (For any other going w00t: http://omnifi.com.sg/baby-and-maternal-milk/) Ok, so it seems to be low fat milk powder fortified with "stuff good for the mother". Um, well... I would just go for a pre-natal vitamin (mainly for the folic acid) available in any pharmacy. If you don't ordinarily drink milk or have some other good dietary source of calcium, then add a calcium tablet.

Hmm, well... if there is some country/area where this stuff is common, then perhaps try a "ethnic store" that specializes in food from there.

Yes maternal milk powder are some specialized formula milk for pregnancy, the reason I asked for maternal milk powder that's for vegetarian because those in the market in my country have DHA which is derived from fish oil.
I'm taking both folic acid and prenatal multi-vitamin supplements, and I do drink pasteurized milk as well. Maternal milk powder is just something with extra nutrients for the baby and I like to drink it hot as it warms your body and stomach (especially before sleep), good alternative when you feel hungry in between meals. I'm not sure if it's uncommon in Finland, that's why I wanna find out :)

Like I said, I went ??? on maternal milk powder. Never ever heard about anything like that (I'm native)... vegetarian or not. "Uncommon" to put it mildly, I would say.

If you drink milk, why not just drink that warm? And find some vegan source for DHA that you can add to your diet if you feel you aren't getting enough of it. Nuts and seeds I would guess... found this link: http://www.vegetarian-dha-epa.co.uk/

But in the end... ordinary food, assuming a somewhat varied diet, should provide you with all the needed nutrients. I would guess that Folic Acid is the only thing that might be good to supplement with, just to be on the safe side. But if you do have concerns about your nutrition, you can always ask the "neuvola" to refer you to a nutritionist.

Edit: D'oh!!! I totally forgot to say: Congratulations on your pregnancy!!!!!
