Number of possible syllables in Finnish?

Post by harris_lindsay » Mon Jun 11, 2012 2:45 am

I am a graduate student in psycholinguistics in the U.S. trying to compile morpho-phonological information for several languages. I have had a hard time coming up with an estimate of the number of syllables possible in Finnish. For example, English has upwards of 8,000 syllables, whereas Japanese has just over a hundred. Could anyone here direct me to a resource where I might get this information for Finnish? I'd really appreciate it!

According to that article, number of theoretically possible syllables is 5696, but only about 3300 of those are used in real life.
