Termination of rental agreement and internet provider

Post by Northern.Lights » Thu Sep 20, 2012 12:27 am

Hey everyone!

I've got two questions. I do know that the rental agreement has to be terminated on the last day of the month according to my rental agreement. Yet, is there any common way on how the termination process works in Finland? Do you have to terminate one month ahead of time or longer? Is there a special form that you have to use and by snail mail or is it sufficient to write an e-mail?

The second question concerns the internet provider. If I terminate the contract, will I have to send the internet router back or how does it work? Does anyone have any experiences with this?

Thanks a lot in advance!

This really depends on what is stated in your contracts. If it says you have to terminate the contract in a certain way, that is what you have to do. But usually, I'd say it can be any way that is documented, email is the most usual thing I'd say. Have you used email in your contacts with the landlord before? Then it makes sense to make the termination that way also. Asking for a reply, to have proof that the landlord saw the email, can be a smart idea. If you are on very good terms with the landlord and you feel there will be no problems, you could even just make a phonecall (but then you have no official proof that you terminated the contract).

Re internet provider, the easiest is to call them and say you want to cancel the contract. Or go to one of their stores and say you want to cancel it. Whatever is easiest, and whatever method the company accepts. If you are renting the modem & router from them, you need to return them. If you own the gear, you don't. Your contract/bills should tell you if you are renting the stuff or not. Or if you are not sure, call the company or visit their offices and ask.

Hi.
About the internet provider, the router should be returned to the provider, if it is rent from them, but
the date is not so strict. Once I returned it tens of days after the contract was terminated and they thanked me for that.
At the moment once again I am in the same situation, i.e. I terminated the contract at end-Aug and I AM still using the rented
router from them. I am planning to return it within this month.
The point is, remember to return it.

The termination of rental contact must be done so it can be proved and in writing. I would in your case call your landlord, inform of your intention and then ask for more details. If you post snailmail, the letter should reach prior to the end of the month.

I sent mine in two copies with self addressed envelope (with a stamp) for the landlord so that she could return the other one with her signature added there. Maybe email after you got reply confirming it has been received would be considered valid by courts, but I would not count on it. Best to have a paper with dates and signatures from both.

Internet gear depends on contract, if the OP does not know what he has agreed on, then he should ask the company. If the OP signed to some fixed (minimum) term contract then perhaps most likely the hardware is for his to keep at the end of the contract, but better to check.
