Teaching jobs in Finland

Post by laurazarian » Thu Jan 03, 2013 12:59 pm

Hey, I'm Laura. I'm originally from Romania but I lived in Poland for 8 years. I'm an English teacher with 7 years experience in Poland, one in CZ and one in Romania. So total of nine years teaching experience.
I've taught primary, high school and adult. I speak English, Polish, French, Romanian fluently and Spanish, Italian, Serbian pretty well. I have minimal knowledge of Finnish but I'm sure I can learn fast.

I'm planning to move to Finland starting with July, enroll in University and have more degrees ;) since it's free I think it's the best thing to do. But i also want to find a job. I'd like Education since i have experience but I could do something else as well until I figure Finland out. ;)

I searched the net but couldn't find that much info there. Would really appreciate some help. I know I still have time but I want to be prepared and start early on.

Thank u so much!!!

So, do you have a university place already? One thing at a time

If you are looking for ad-hoc teaching hours (eg TEFL), you can try places like EF and AAC (they are the two biggest language training providers). But they rarely ever give any kind of contract, not even part-time. It's just ad-hoc hours and if your students give you good feedback, you might be given more hours. By the way, it is extremely difficult for non-native speakers of English to get work. But as you are able to teach other languages (through English) you might get some work that way.

Jobs are here: www.mol.fi and you can find more info about teaching English by using the search engine on this forum.

HI!
I'll be studying at the Univ of Helsinki, MA also Education since I want to focus on this for now :)

I figured working as a teacher might be a little challenging but am willing to try. I mean why not, right? But I believe it's better to find a job before getting there ( best case scenario is always so optimistic)

If I can't find anything I am willing to do any job as long as I can lead a decent life. I know rent can be pretty expensive so I guess I need more than 1500 to get by....

Thank u so much for your help. :)

PS: I'll look into mol.fi right now.

There are many language schools ...which mainly aim to teach " business english" but this is ad hoc work ..... but may fit in well with your studies. Another company i see advertised everywhere is "speaking out" it aims to teach nursery and school children .... but you have to find your own contacts with a bit of support from the speaking out company.
Otherwise , it could be a good idea to register with agencies ... im guessing Helsinki area ...being the capital would pay higher than the normal low wage of 9 euros per hour ..... but you always have to remember tax in this country .....everything is taxed!!!

...this company used to be called Fun Languages: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=6338

I suggest you google some before you apply.

Yeah I check the net Fun Languages sounds like bad news....:( And Speaking out requires fluent Finnish or Swedish and I'm just beginner.

I'll keep looking. Still have like 7 months to go :)

The pessimistic view is:
Finland is a country where many people already speak English at a pretty good level, and you are not a native English speaker.

You have the advantage of a relevant university degree and experience, but that won't necessarily make it trivial for you to find a job.

Just for getting by as a student something like € 500 per month is roughly the low end.

But yes, for a "decent life" you can easily spend € 1500 per month.

Getting € 1500 per month after taxes would require a full-time job, and that would not be compatible with your studies.

The degree will be in Adult Education MA. I was supposed to start earlier but had it postponed for autumn.

The thing is I don;t see how I can get by living like a student that's why I also need a full time job. I'm moving in with kids and I am 30 so I've done this whole ,, living like a student" thing. ;) If u know what I mean.

I know it's going to be incredibly challenging but I guess if U really want something in live u need to work really hard to get it.

There might be some chance to find something teaching the "rare languages" like Romanian and Polish... but English... eh...
