Hi All,
We moved to finland 2 years ago. I am working in finland, and have A type resident permit. My wife also have the same type due to family ties. She is studying for her Phd. She do not receive any financial support for that. She got grants time to time from some organizations. But last one is one year ago. I read Kela benefits and found that there are student Financial aids and unemployment aids. I want to know, can she get one of those and which one is more suitable to apply ?
Thanks in advance for replies.

As far as I know every Phd (or scientist) on grant should pay MELA
http://www.mela.fi/Etusivu
There is a special part or grant receivers. If you pay that you get "KELA" coverage.

Thank you for the reply.

She had to fill this Mela, when she applied some grants. Some percentage( pay to Mela) is mentioned in the grant applications. But she did not receive any of those grants. She got one university grant as a personal grant (which did not mention any of those.).

Thanks for replies.

Since i have different answers. I am not sure which place we should go and check. Anyway, we planned to visit Kela office today and check further details with them. Hope for the best.

Is she eligible to unemployment financial aid.
is she "unemployed"? If she is a student, she is not "unemployed". Not working is not being "unemployed" thats a special status. In principle, to get "unemployment" you need to have been working for 10 months first.

Well, you sit on top of broken washing machines... might as well hunt bears with bow and arrow.

The other problem is that unemployment benefits are only being paid to jobseekers, and student and jobseeker tend to be incompatible with each other (you cannot start tomorrow a 37.5 hours/week 9-5 job or a full-time training when you are at the same time supposed to study).

As you have a A status because of your wife's status, you are entitled to go to the job office on Linankatu and report to them that you do not have a job. They will either give you a job or send you to the vocational center where you'll be paid about 800 euros every month.
