3 Questions about Blueberry ?

Post by Samer2010 » Wed Jul 17, 2013 10:05 am

Hi Forum,

I think now is the Blueberry season, and there are SO MANY people who sell it in the open markets and outside the S-Market and the CityMarket.

My questions are:

1) Do they sell Wild Blueberry or Cultivated Blueberry? I always ask the seller, but they are shrugging their shoulders and say: "Sorry, But I really don't know :( ".

2) Where can I find Wild Blueberry ? I really tried and asked many people and they don't know. Aside from the suggestion "Go to forests and pick it from there", Do you have any info ?

3)I found in some shops frozen Organic Blueberry (Luomu Mustikka), Is that considered Wild Blueberry or not ?

I would really appreciate your suggestions !

Happy (Rainy) Summer !

If it says "Pensasmustikka" it is cultivated (or if it does not stain).
Else it is wild AFAIK. Blueberry as we know it is not very easily cultivated.

As for where it is found... In the forest. Tends to prefer bit damp environment. You are permitted to pick them up from forest without asking permissions, as long as you do not cause any other damage to forest.

Yes, or to put it even more exact... (sorry for the long post)

The thing you (probably, especially if you are from the US) mean by blueberry is indeed pensasmustikka: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blueberry
It's bigger, and is green inside. It doesn't grow here wild, only cultivated, and I would guess most sold here has been imported.

The thing we natives (probably) mean by blueberry is bilberry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilberry
It's smaller, and is dark blue inside. It's not cultivated (it's very hard to cultivate), all sold ones have been picked from the forest, although they may be imported.

The big "mustikka" sold in shops in small punnets are blueberries, or pensasmustikka, even though the sign may only say "mustikka". I very much doubt any of them have been grown wild. The ones sold by the litre/kg (usually from stalls) is wild bilberries, or mustikka, and like I said, always picked from the forests. The frozen mustikka you buy in shops is bilberries, although the frozen "luomu mustikka" you saw I guess could have been blueberry/pensasmustikka, as the "luomu" part makes otherwise no sense. Luomu doesn't mean though that it has been grown wild, just that it has been grown in a way that adheres to the "luomu" principle.

That said, native Finns refer to both blueberries and bilberries as mustikka and few realize that they aren't the same thing... but, most will know what you mean if you say "pensasmustikka". Almost nobody has heard of the word "bilberry", as the word we learn in school for our mustikka is blueberry. I had absolutely no idea until somebody pointed it out here on Finland Forum.

Wild doesn't mean luomu, unless the area is luomu certified: http://luomu.fi/kasvit/keruuluomua/

Thanks loads Tiwaz, CH, and Upphew for all the valuable info !

What about this (http://www.valio.fi/tuotteet/mehut-ja-m ... kkakeitto/)? Is it Blueberry or Bilberry (Note that is made in Finland)? Also, Is it from wild or organic (Notice that the description states: "Luomuluonnonmarjat")?
