Finnish Sausages

Post by Y77 » Wed Jul 31, 2013 1:52 pm

is it just me or Finnish makkarat taste absolutely awful, with the consistency of plastic and an aftertaste of tears? Does anybody like them?
Luckily Lidl sells the delicious German small nuernberger sausages!

Many agree. I'd only say that if you look carefully you can find even in the regular supermarkets sausages made predominantly of meat (but Lidl is good in price/quality respect).

Great, another Kebab thread! :D Um, er, I mean Sausages Thread!

Yes Finnish (in fact most Nordic) sausages are a hopeless excuse for what should be a tasty and satisfying eating experience.

Lidl do reasonable sausages, but Prisma/SMarket also stock some similar small Nurnbergers (better than Lidl's IMO), 4.09€ for 8, so not cheap, but the meat % is high.

Also, if you are in anyway wary of MRM/Pink Slime/etc, then check labels of Finnish sausages carefully. The cheaper options are full of it (e.g. HK Camping, Atria, etc).

Finally, if you are planning on partaking in multiple grown-up beverages. Then having a BBQ where food will be briefly surface-burnt in the flames, whilst the core remains cold, before being guzzled down, then stick with the Finnish sausages. They are pre-cooked and safe to eat straight from the pack. :D
Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

There are more and more "local" producers making sausages but it is not so easy to find them and they cost a LOT more than HK etc. You have to be prepared to pay a LOT more for good sausages.

Sometimes we make our own and sometimes we buy local eg West Chark http://www.westchark.fi/fi/ which is walking distance from our cabin. I've noticed that the little supermarket near our mökki has at least 3 or 4 locally-produced sausages but these never get as far as Helsinki, it's just too complicated and expensive for them to sell through retail wholesalers like Inex (S-Group).

Have you tried Hakaniemi Kauppahalli?
