Moving to Finnland

Post by baselm » Fri Sep 13, 2013 1:34 am

Hi All,
I'm will move to Finland from Ireland. I was planning to bring my car with me as I read in this forum that new immigrant can bring tax free car if he is moving from another EU country. The problem is the cars in Ireland are Right handed Drive.
So I was thinking to Import a car from Germany directly to Finland. Is this possible !
Does this make my car eligible for the rules described in this link https://www.vm.fi/vm/en/10_taxation/06_ ... /index.jsp
Do you think it is a good idea or I need to buy a Car in Finland
I really find this forum so helpful. Thanks to everybody

So yeah, you can bring it, if you have owned it for long enough time.

Right hand drive cars aren't illegal, or even that uncommon here.
I've seen several older british sportscars here that are.
Also, all the postal vehicles are right-hand drive(easier to drop the letters without getting out ;D.
And they are sold regularily at nettiauto to private customers(usually the yaris verso style cars)

Even rhd cars are used in Finland, selling it here might be a problem (longer wait, lower price). Especially if it is not a attractive model.
And you have to upgrade the car for use in Finland (engine heating, extra rims for winter tyres.)
It might be cheaper to sell it in Ireland and by an other one here.
It also depends where you'll live. In many places there are no dealers for every brand nearby.

Many thanks to your replies.
Yes, I did read the rules. The rule is a new immigrant can import his/her removal goods from EU member states during the first 12 months of his stay in Finland, which means I can buy a car like Mercedes C180 petrol 2005 for 3000 to 5000 euros in Ireland. After few months I can import it to finland, if and only if, it is okay to drive RHD car

FYI, Importing a car from Germany to Finland is not an option as the immigrant should own the car for at least six months prior importing it.
My problem is I find the car prices in Finland extremely expansive comparing to what we have in Ireland.

Now my question is, For example, if i want to buy the same car Mercedes C180 petrol 2005 in Finland, How much it will cost ! and how much the Car tax per year ?
Thanks
