Car insurance: Unbelievably cheap

Post by Honest » Wed Oct 30, 2013 3:05 pm

I need to renew my car insurance soon so I was just having a look at the prices offered by different companies. One of them, POP vakuutus (https://www.popvakuutus.fi) is incredibly and unbelievably cheap. Almosy half of the price than the next cheapest.

Does anybody have insurance from them? Is there anything tricky? Apparently looks alright.

Ok. To make it clearer, if all the parameters are kept the same, they are offering insurance at almost half of the price than others.

Or to make it even simpler, if you look at the price of the compulsory insurance, it's unblieveably cheaper than others.

Cory, enter your and your cars details in the calculator and see how much is the difference in the price they are offering and the price you are currently paying.

What are you considering cheap? Price will vary based on the coverage. They may have quoted you just the base rate without, for example, glass replacement, animal damage, etc.
Umm, if we look just at liikennevakuutus (the mandatory one that they can't give maximum bonuses right away) I get better quote at 0% bonus than what I pay now. Someone will get new insurance tomorrow or at least waay better price from the current insurance company...

Everybody can change his insurance any time, just need to give extra 15 euros to get new " tekninen osa" (Paper containing insurance company's name).

It seems like I need to call my insurance tomorrow and have a little haggle... I mean chat with them.
Brilliant post, OP.

Not that much cheaper, but still noticeably cheaper. Should perhaps try to find time to check during the weekend in more detail...

Got quote from my current insurance company. I'm still going to save over 200 if I switch.

edit. or rather _when_ I switch...

I was forced to research prices every year when a couple of years ago I realised that even my bonus percentage was increasing, the premium was not decreasing accordingly. They were simply increasing the price so at the end I was not getting a real bonus just a tricky bogus bonus.

Same thing goes with combining more than one insurances. On paper it appears we are getting a big discount while in reality many times it's cheaper to buy different insurances from different companies, only problem is the hassle of researching and finding the best combination.

Suomen Vahinkovakuutus Oy or Finnish P&C Insurance Ltd serves two prominent banking sector brands in Finland: POP Pankkiryhmää (or POP Bank Group) and the Säästöpankkiryhmää (or Finnish Savings Banks Group). The company started its operations in 2012 and is now owned by the POP Bank Group.

As you can see both, POP-Pankki and Säästöpankki, are using the same insurance calculator of this Finnish P&C Insurance Ltd:
POP Pankki: https://www.poppankki.fi/pop-vakuutus or
POP Insurance: https://www.popvakuutus.fi (They provide ONLY virtual/online insurance service)

Säästöpankki: https://www.saastopankki.fi/vakuutus or
Säästöpankki Insurance: https://www.saastopankinvakuutukset.fi

Bottom line, one can get cheap insurance from Säästöpankki rather then POP Pankki - because Säästöpankki offers on-site services and is easy to reach through their branch offices located in every city of Finland.

Bottom line: Tapiola did, after I escalated the situation to manager of local branch, as I told them. I would have liked to keep on using them, but price difference was just too big. What did I escalate and what we agreed: do not call me, do not contact me, just send the effing bills. If I have something on my mind I'll contact, but before that you just waste time for everyone and piss me off. Worked like a charm. :)

Isnspired from opening post of this thread, I decided to get a quote from POP-vakuutus. As I'm not greatest fan of poorly executed on-line calculators - POP's calculator might be well above average, but I wanted to avoid even slightest risk of something disturbing my good mood - I gave them an ancient-school voice call and asked for some ballpark prices. To my surprise, it didn't take many seconds for their sales to answer, and the salesguy was pretty helpful, after getting my SSN he got a complete list of my cars from Trafi (This easy usage of all registers for different marketing purposes is actually a bit frightening, but that's another story.) and -according to my request - said he'll give a detailed offer by e-mail next morning. Being so curious about the subject, I asked him to calculate exact price for Mrs's car with all bonus details etc. right there. I thought that this would be good reference, since Mrs has this special 75% bonus (She is wise enough to ram on indestructible objects only, so no insurance cases)in our present insurance company. And since we have multi-car discount, trade union discount, loyalty discount, receive full S-bonus and whatever, the sum on last row of my spreadsheet on column IF was only some 10% higher than on (very simple)column POP...

Since my good mood was over, I thought I'll check what would be off-the-shelf price for a click-in customer at IF webshop. To my surprise, and for benefit of antihypertension medicine producers, the price I got from IF's internet calculator, was _lower_ than final effective price on my calculations with all discounts and bonuses. After some checking and double-checking, I decided to call and ask IF about their pricing policy.

And here are the interesting facts found during that telephone call:

-Click-in price from webshop can be lower than price for 20+ years loyal customer with all possible and impossible discounts. Yes, they know that and it is so on purpose.
-IF won't give that lower price for existing insurance.
-If you're willing to do the paperwork and register your car for Mrs and Mrs's car for yourself overnight, the insurances would be treated as new insurances and you could benefit from their webshop discount (or whatever the actual name was)
-IF is not actually interested in some poor households with insurance fees totalling only couple of k€s a year.
-Despite of enormous ranting, cursing and even some insulting, their call-center personnel lets the outraged customer hang up himself. (Respect!)

As a result, I decided to give POP a try. At first only with car insurances, because on them there are practically no differences on terms and conditions, only the price differs.

In practice, it seems pretty easy to change your car insurance to another company. I just told the POP-salesguy the registration numbers for the cars I wanted to transfer to their insurance, and he said that's all I have to do. They'll get the claims history data for calculating bonuses straight from IF and all I have to do is wait for (smaller)bill. They even promised to put green cards in same envelope!

In the Good Old Days it would have necessitated multiple visits to some mysterious offices, begging for official traffic insurance proof stickers, stamps and whatnot...
