Shipping goods from US to FInland

Post by Benderis » Sat Jan 25, 2014 2:41 am

Hello,

I looking maybe someone can advice cheap and good service to ship household items from Chicago to Finland . My mom live in Finland and I coming back to live there and would like to bring some of my things . Fedex and UPS and USPS are extremely expensive since most of their shippings are with delivery in 5 days . And I need to ship about 400 vinyls 4 turntables including dj mixer 2 speakers + big subwoofer . As well 180 inch projector screen with projector and 2 pc's . So it's not to many items but vinyls are very heavy and projector screen is very long . All items are used so I hope there will be no problems with customs to bring so much electronic. It's took years to collect all the things so I can't them leave her .

Damn...that's quite a load. I brought my PC with me in a large suitcase from the US, I've got a huge tower...had to pay oversized baggage fee unfortunately which was I think about 150 dollars...but It was a good PC and I brought clothes with it so I guess it was as good as it was going to get...it was risky but It came over in tact.

I don't think there's going to be much good news in sending it over...I certainly don't know any necessarily cheap method...at the rate you're going to pay to ship that over you might as well have someone fly down with you if you're coming from there as well and store that stuff in carry-ons/their luggage, then they get to travel themselves. Otherwise, you're not only risking it getting damaged on the way over, but possibly stolen as well...might need to strip the parts on the PC's, and try to get creative with the other items in luggage and such.

With all that stuff, I might consider some kind of moving company that does that if I were you...at least maybe it'll be better protected, can't help you much on advise in this area...I think just one important thing to me would be getting it there in one piece, you might end up paying for damaged equipment...I'd say at least make sure it gets over properly.

When I moved here I finally went with USPS. It was about 1/2 of the enormous quotes I got from UPS, FedEx. But still expensive. I brought 14 boxes and it cost me about $900. It sounds like your stuff might weigh more than mine though. The boxes were 24"x14"x14" or about that size. I think you're going to have a problem finding a "cheap" method to ship from the US to Finland.

My stuff arrived within one week. I dropped off my boxes at the post office on July 30 before going to the airport, and the Posti guys brought half of them to my apartment on August 6. I had to go to Tulli to pick up the rest.

And regarding customs you can bring your household stuff, but I can't say how they'll react to all of your stuff being electronics and music. They cut one of my boxes open to check and that one happened to be full of clothes and linens.

We shipped a whole bunch of stuff from Houston to Helsinki via sea freight. It worked out cheaper than any other option but it took about a month for the stuff to arrive. We had to drop off the stuff personally at the port in Houston and then had to pick them up personally from Helsinki. I am sure you could find some shipping firm in Chicago that can do this for you.
