Registering .fi domains

Post by lupine » Thu Apr 10, 2014 4:23 am

Blaaaah. I've discovered a vanity domain I'd quite like to have under .fi, but gandi (at least) require me to:

"Indicate a Finish identity number (11 characters) for individuals, or an official Finnish business, association, or foundation registration number (7 digits, a hyphen, 1 digit or 8 digits directly) for a registered entity."

Don't suppose anyone knows if there's a way around this, or a proxy registrar I could use that doesn't require me to have one of these? :D

As far as I can remember .fi domains are reserved for residents of Finland (the ssn) or businesses registered in Finland. So no number, no .fi.

It is by law so there is no legal way for any other entity to own a domain. You can start a holding company for it if you reside in the EU (otherwise you need someone who does to help). There are no yearly fees for maintaining the holding company but paperwork does have to be filed. Technically a Finnish entity could act as a proxy by owning the domain and adding name servers you control. However, this goes at least against the spirit of the law. You can PM me if you are interested enough to invest more the money required to implement these.

Yes you need either a Finnish social id or a company registered in Finland to register a .fi domain.
