... there are other possibilities.

Minä tiedän mitä se on vuodeosasto, mutta ...

i found as translation in english only "ward"; isn't
there some other word that seems to describe my osasto better,
well, not mine, i am not ready for that yet... ;-)

closed ward, padded ward....

osasto is one of these words that you can use for about a dozen words; it depends on the context what it is: hospital osasto = ward ; factory/store osasto = department ; ship osasto = compartment ; military osasto = platoon/battallion (a division) etc.

Here's the "official" translations about medical facilities in case you need them: http://www.laakariliitto.fi/julkaisut/t ... aatio.html

Have you not heard Hank sing...

They're coming to take me away, HA HA
They're coming to take me away, HO HO HEE HEE HA HA
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see
Those nice, young men
In their clean, white coats
And they're coming to take me away, Ha-haaa!

To the happy home
With trees and flowers and chirping birds
And basket weavers who sit and smile
And twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they're coming to take me away, Ha-haaa!

To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see
Those nice, young men
In their clean, white coats
And they're coming to take me away, Ha-haaa!

A vuodeosasto is just a ward. However, you can specify it if you wish by adding e.g. surgical/paediatric/post-natal  or whatever you need. Or perhaps "for the chronically ill"/"for the elderly"/"for the old and frail"... Or, you could go around it somehow, if need still be, and use the term "in-patient" in some form? "I know what it's like, being an in-patient". Not quite the same, though.

Is it a novel you're translating?
