Hello everyone!
I've been here in Finland for a year now. I am having my integration program and already in my 6months and yet still can't really speak decent Finnish. I have my Bachelor degree in English in my home country and a one year teaching experience in College however, that does not entitle me here to teach. And with my limited Finnish skills, most likely I can't find a job being a teacher. Having my Masters and enrolling myself in STEP in HU would be the solution, which will take 3 years, but practically speaking that does not guarantee a job right away. I asked my friends who are Nurses here and they've been telling me to be a lahihoittaja or sairaanhoittaja as the Uusimaa region is in dire need right now. I could be a nurse but I don't want to give up being a teacher either. What I am thinking is, apply for Nursing program and when I will be accepted, by next year apply for Masters in English Philology. I am not sure though if that would be possible. I am not familiar with study rights in Finland. Those who know about this case, kindly comment below. Kiitos!
Taking Bachelors and Masters at the same time

If you are interested to become a teacher, have you checked with haaga helia university of applied sciences? If not do so they have a vocational teacher education they run there and the application starts by january www.haaga-helia.fi

Yes it's allowed to be enrolled into two programs at the same time. There is a limit that you can only accept only position per year. As tummansininen said be sure to know what it means for your benefits. Unless TE-office is co-operative then you might be on student benefits.PvZ2 wrote:What I am thinking is, apply for Nursing program and when I will be accepted, by next year apply for Masters in English Philology. Yeah, I checked Haga-Helia for the Teaching Pedagogy. However, I am very doubtful to be accepted coz my husband who got 8 years of experience in IT and have Masters didn't even qualify for the program for lack of points. His coworker have 10years of experience and with Masters as well, is also turned down.Nimi wrote:If you are interested to become a teacher, have you checked with haaga helia university of applied sciences? My integration program will end March 2015 and the next application for Masters in HU is this Dec-Jan and for the Polytechnic this Feb. so, finishing my integration program is not really an issue. I did talked beforehand with my TE officer and he is ok with me going to University after the program. Assuring me that it will be covered by Kela as well for student benefits.tummansininen wrote:Have you spoken to the TE-office about this? I would suggest you do. Firstly to ensure you don't get rapped over the knuckles and secondly just in case they can support studies.
Personally I would stay in the Finnish courses. You can't expect fluency in six months. Nobody can do that. Get as much Finnish as you can because no matter what career you go after later, this is the best time to learn it.
Great! Will do it then as it really is a time saver!betelgeuse wrote:

You should of course ask your friends who are nurses here whether nursing studies are so easy that you can do full master studies in a different area at the same time.
That will of course give them a good laugh.
