Nokia HP9500

Post by wanmohd » Tue Apr 12, 2005 2:51 pm

Anybody could assist me to indicate how much is Nokia Communicator 9500 cost in Finland. I'm going to Finland very soon and plan to buy the HP. Nokia 9500 cost around Euro 600 in my country. Is it worth buying here or Finland? Thanks

Makitorppa is selling them for 790 Euros, so maybe you could bring a few with you...

We all have Nokia phones  but never bought any of them in Finland. Never had any problems. My 6600 (from Singapore) went dead on me once but Makitorppa fixed it under the worldwide guarantee and didn't charge.

You will be able to knock some euros (50-70 or so) off the 790 in internet based stores (they actually allow for some haggling :o), but probably not quite down to 600.

What do you expect - don't you know anything "made in Finland" is always cheaper bought abroad.

Actually Nokia 9500 is not really cheap in my country but comparing with Finland we are in advantage of currency exchange. As the euro getting stronger, the goods getting cheaper in my country if you convert to euro. Not to bad, for those business person who is importing goods from this region.

Putting the euro/dollar difference aside, here is a simple rule with mobile phones: if it is used primarily in the US, buy it in the US; if used primarily in Europe, buy it in Europe. I am not a Nokia fan, but bought their 9300 after long and deliberate research. It is the best thing since sliced bread - no more carrying the laptop, thank you! Best price for the 9300 was 614 euro out of the UK. The 9500 is more, but didn't want that dinky camera. Other points. If you buy it in Finland, hope you understand Finnish or Swedish since the rather large user manual that comes with the phone is not in English. As for the keyboard, it only comes in the QWERTY US style in any country (the German type being the only other option). The extra Finnish/Swedish letters of the alphabet are symbels you have to insert.

Hope this helps.

Is this because of price plans or other reasons?

My UK provider is offering me I can't remember which communicator for 70 sterling as an upgrade, which I thought was a lot until I read these messages (handsets in the UK being "free" as they are tied into a priceplan)

Also anyone here had issues with a UK phone tied to a price plan not accepting a foreign SIM card as a result.

Most phones that you buy on a price plan are locked to only accept sim cards from that network in that country. If it is a Nokia phone it is pretty easy to get around all you need is th correct software and the IMEI code from your phone and you can generate an unlock code that will do it.

Other phone brands vary in the way they are unlocked but most can be unlocked if not using software to generate a code then by using the a specific cable to hook up to your pc.
