driving licence

Post by kiely » Mon May 23, 2005 2:38 pm

Hi there
I will be moving to Finland and i wondered if anyone knows about the driving licence stipulations. Such as if you need to register for a finnsh licence and how to go about it.
Thanks

Hiya,

Things may have changed since I moved here, but this was the situation at that time. I had to drive for at least 6 months and have two witnesses provide a paper stating that I had been driving for 6 months. My US licence was only valid for 18 months.

If you have a British licence it is not neccesary. (You are EU citizen not a Yank..it is different for them...))
But suggest..
1. Keep a UK address e.g parents/close family.
2: Notify the UK licence authority that you are changing address to this above address...(they dont want to know or care that you are moving to Finland).

Reason for above....

3: The form obtainable from the post office in UK will tell you that... "obtaining a new licence (plastic card with Photo) is FOC on changing address within the UK."
This photo/card licence is an ideal ID card for use in Finland.

If your driving licence has been issued in a EU country, you'll be allowed to drive in Finland as long as you want! No matter if you are a tourist or a resident in Finland...
Have a look at this page.

if your english(uk)

you can goto a police station in finland and ask to transfer your UK licence to a finnish licence,,,they will give you a form

you will also have to have a medical (costs 40 euro)
th once youve had your medical and filled in the form,,you have to pay the police 40 euro for them to register your licence
3 weeks later they will phone call you and tell you your licence is in the station

brand new finnish plastic carded licence:D

this is what i did

transfered my english licence to a finnish licence!!

o yeah and you need passport photos(2)

o yeah again,,,they will want to keep your old licence!

But if you have had your UK licence for years be warned, you may lose some of your classes!

And if you move back to the UK you can swap it back again

I have been here for four years. I have a UK drivers licence valid until 2028 and a French one which is valid indefinitely and also one I picked up in Hungary. So I never bothered to get a Finnish one. I would certainly not consider paying for one, or having a medical

I'm not a Yank, I'm a Texan! Don't lump me with them. Yankee is a very bad word in Texas.

I am driving on my uk license at the moment - it doesn't expire for another 2 years, so I see no point in paying 40 euros for a Finnish one. At the police station, they said that was fine, but of course will have to pay to renew it when it expires.
