Hi there, my Finnish/German Wife and me German will come to Finnland in August for a year.
And we wondered if we can drive around with a leased car with german license plates registered on my father ?
I know this one is tricky, but I hope someone can give me advice, or at least calm me down a bit
cheers

A resident of Finland may not drive a foreign registered car.
Do you think we wouldn't be doing that if it was possible?
Of course, you can, but if and when you get caught your father will have a lot of explaining to the leasing company why the car is in a customs pound in Finland and they want 3x the value of the car in tax
Now what you can do is bring it in as tourist vehicle for 6 months, but after that its not allowed.
And no, they don't refund car tax.
Cheers, Hank W.

I would say the main issue is with insurance. If you were to have an accident in Finland the German insurance company may want some explanations and the usual deal with insurance companies is that you only have 3 months of overlap time when you take a car abroad.
I am sure there are all kinds of ways of getting over the Finnish 6 month rule (you stick it on a ferry to Tallinn every 6 months... ) and I know of Brits who have taken the risk and got away with it. Also the 6 month rule can be officially waivered in some cases - I know of at least one Nokia ex-pat who was allowed to keep his BWM here for 18 months on UK reg plates as temporary residents with a temporary contract. (but it wasnt a lease car)

You carve the date on your door with the key?
The customs officers are there really just for show.

yes I agree in these Schengen times you need to hire a hound to find them, but they're there for exactly that reason.
