For Sushi at Home, Skip the Fish

Post by jtammilehto » Fri May 07, 2010 10:22 am

Anyone seen any Sushi places doing this kind of thing? Sure could bring the often ridiculous prices down - but then again good veggies not so cheap in Finland

Sure gives some new ideas for 'home'

I don´t know, why not. But I prefer maki-rolls with vegetables only, nigiri has to have fish. And sushi costs next to nothing when you make it yourself. Just be sure that you cook the rice right, that is the main thing.

Since I got those plastic moulds to shape the makis and nigiris (sorry, cheating I know!!) :D we've been having sushi home too.

We love salmon nigiri but I'm unsure about how to slice it right. Where do you get the best fresh salmon? Sometimes I've bought back a fillet and wonder if it's absolutely safe for raw consumption. Do you freeze your salmon and then thaw it for nigiris?

Thanks from the Amateur sushi maker.
P.S. In case anyone is interested, K-Supermarket Kamppi carries an excellent range of Clearspring Organic products (barley, brown rice miso, tamari, shoyu, buckwheat noodles etc)

That's nothing really new; quiet a few Japanese don't eat flesh of any sort for religious reasons.
It's just been hidden in the West due to the obsessive mantra of "sushi equals fish" in the heads
of Westerners.

Nääh, they don't have to have fish on them.

Shazzer: ask. If they can't tell you right off the bat, don't take it. Once you find a good
fishmonger, stick to him like a barnacle on a piling! :D I don't freeze my salmon at all.
And if you're worried about how you're cutting it, make oshizushi :)
By the time you get done making it, no one will care how it was cut! Or deconstruct
the sushi to the point that no one is busy looking at how you cut it as they're trying to figure
out what the heck it is in the first place ;)

Magic: When ya hosting the FF sushi feast? ;)

I want to know how you manage to keep your kids (or spouses) from sucking down the nori
for the maki before you get them made? :D

:D One of my fav quotes about sushi comes from my ex-MIL:

"I just don't get the big hullabaloo about sushi; it just tastes like
fish and rice" :D

She went on to put salt on top of each and every piece of
sushi in front of her

Or how about the quote from a baseball broadcast I heard:

"I just don't get the big hullabaloo about sushi; it just tastes like
any other fish when you fry it"

Enk, any chance of you sharing your fishmonger with me?!!
Oh the price of these Nori sheets here is so expensive and for such a small pack too! Do you know anyplace where I can get them cheaper (yes, I'm guilty of sucking them down too!!)
Thanks enk and great to hear from you!

The main one I use is the Argentinian woman in Hakaniemi kauppahalli. She's absolutely
fabulous!

I have to confess to shipping the dang things back with me from the States since we have to
drive by a Mitsuwa's to get to O'Hare  :D

If I run out, I'm willing to sacrifice quality for price with these and go with the ones from
Vii Voan and places like that. If I need quality nori, I go to Tokyokan though.

Oh thank you so much enk!! Now I bet there's a stampede as half this forum beats a path to that Argentinian woman's fish stall! :D
