Hi,
Could we somehow compile a list of necessary documents for Europeans moving to Finland?
Insurance forms, Police record, and all that bureaucratic crap that they throw in your way when you move...
* How can I insure myself till I get a job?
* Do I need to register with the police?
* What do I need to open a bank account?
* Do I need anything in order to be able to get a mobile phone contact?
* Anything else that doesn´t exist in the rest of Europe?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks Papu
Documents for europeans
You don’t have to pay a deposit for a phone, they will try to ask for it. As stated by DNA to me "you have to live in Finland for the past two years" my wife and i got our phones at the same time they hooked her up and then started with me next then they asked for the deposit saying the above quote, i just pointed out the fact that you just gave my wife a connection and she has not lived in Finland for the past two years. the DNA rep then said "but she's Finnish"
You can predict what I had to say about that, a manager at DNA office called me 5 minutes after my connection was activated and apologized

Money and an address/residence in Finland...Papu wrote: * What do I need to open a bank account?

You cant transfer money here untill you have a bank account and you cant open a bank account untill you have an address here.
So first you come do all the paper work (police etc)..get an address..take some cash to a bank..convince them you have a legal address here.
Open account..
Get the bank IBAN for your account..inform your bank back home to send money asap to this IBAN.

Hi!
There's a web site called Expat Finland (http://www.expat-finland.com) that answers lots of questions about moving here.
Re:
* Do I need to register with the police?
If you're staying longer than a year you have to, but it's a good idea anyway. See

* What do I need to open a bank account?
See http://expat-finland.com/finance/account.html
* Do I need anything in order to be able to get a mobile phone contact?
See

Good luck! And once you're here and into the swing of things it's great!

Yes, excellent advice, but the answer has nothing to say about "do I have to register with the Police".
Logic is: You need to have 1 thing here:
- henkilötunnus
to get henkilötunnus you have to do one thing:
- register at the maistraatti,
and for that you need 1 thing:
- oleskelulupa
To get oleskelulupa you need to do one thing:
- register at the police station...
The Police and Maistraatti databases are not connected in a way that the Maistraatti would know if there is issued a residence permit to a person or not. The knack is you first have to go get your henkilötunnus - because it just makes life easier, you can get your tax card and start working. However then you need to go to the police to get your residence permit, because the maistraatti (as said in the text) will not register you as a permanent resident in the city. Now once a person gets their Oleskelulupa -card they need to go to the Maistraatti and get the record straight. This is necessary on the long run for getting small things (like residential cheap buspass), KELA card or even kids into school...
Now depending on the level of coffee, SAD, MAD, bureaucratic vice, flowerhateedism and whatnot in the very bureaucratic person handling a certain paper at a certain time, things can go smoothily or then they can seem an obstacle course of catch-22's .
