Help with translation

Post by suomifred » Sat Apr 23, 2005 10:02 pm

Hello,
Could anyone tell me how to say 'Klosterwiese' /name of a village/ - German, 'Cloister Meadow'/English/ -n Finnish. This is the name of the village in Poland where I live. I know we do not translate the names of the towns, villages but this is just for fun. I am keen to know it.
My next question is : What does Kankaanpaa /a Finnish town/ mean ?
Thank you.

Hiya,

I'd say Klosterwiese would perhaps be Luostarinniitty - quite a pretty name, actually!

And "Kankaanpää" I think refers to the edge of a forest; "kangasmetsä" is a certain type of forest very typical of the Finnish landscape, also referred to as "kangas" (NOT the cloth-type! ) and "pää" is not only the head on our shoulders but the end of something (like the head is indeed the end of the body). There are a fair number of place names with "kangas" or "kankaan" playing a part. No wonder, we are a pretty foresty country, after all!

How's that? I hope someone'll correct me if I'm wrong! :)

kangasmetsä is forest with not much undergrowth (dry, shadowed by tall pines or firs) so 'Kankaanpää' could be roughly "Heathend"

This is fun: scroll down to the equivalence of names; a few there I don't understand in Finnish nor English.
