Residence permit options

Post by Rizoliina » Fri Sep 30, 2005 5:49 pm

hey people,
Hope you guys can help figure this out for us.
My wife who is finnish and I got married here in NYC and want to move to Italy! We are trying to get me a residence permit from Finland to move to Europe.
She starts school in Italy in Jan05 and the question is I have an Indian passport and if I apply here in NYC it takes bout 3 months OR they said we should go to Finland and apply for one there..it takes around 1 mth.
Anyone know if by any chance the process ever speeds up in NY and also when they say "financial records" what exactly is the dollar amount that works :D .
If one gets the permit from Finland can it be used to live in Italy?

hope you guys can help... gotta ask more ..but baby steps

First of all you need a Residence Permit to come to Finland. Now when you get that you can stay in Finland and VISIT Italy. You can't stay in Italy with that, the Finnish residence permit will very much work as a Schengen visa which allows you to stay in Schengen countries for 30 days in 6 months.

A EU citizen can stay in other EU country (Italy for you) but you are not an EU citizen...you may get Finnish Citizenship on marriage ground but that may take years .....

hope this helps...

Ok 2 things, Firstly you need to get a residence permit from italy if that is where you will be living, a finnish residence permit is only for residence n finland. What you should be able to do is get into italy as a visitor, and apply for residence there. Because your wife is an eu citizen, they have to give ou a residence permit valid for 1 year. now some countries, i dont personally know about italy, take 3-6 months to give you the permit (finland) and others (ireland) will do it on the spot in a coule of hours. so you need to get the residence permit from italy if you plan to live there. check this link out. http://europa.eu.int/youreurope/nav/en/ ... ls/en.html

If you need any more help or have specific questions PM me and i ll do my best to help. I am an Aussie who did a similar thing, married a finnish girl and we moved first to ireland. so if i can help i will.

Good Luck

Thanks guys for the info,
Jussi, you think its better to find out at the italian consulate in NYC or should we just take care of it once we get to Italy and she registers for a student permit and then I can under "family reasons".
i was reading the link you posted and it says 'the spouse of aan EU citizen can register after the EU citizen is registered under student/worker or a related field. The non EU spouse gets a permit for the same time as the permit validityof the EU citizen"

On a different note, Karoliina wants to know which part of Finland do you live in coz your name is so Finnish :)

Hi, it is better to go to the italian consulate, first, and they will give you exact instructions on what to do, whether you will need an additional visa to just get into the country or if you can just walk in. if they dont know they should be able to find out, just give them plenty of time.

Oh, and im living in oulu, at the moment, but for all those who know me, my finnish name is not from my parents, i changed it after i was married to my finnish wife...so there we are...i am mad after all....

Good luck with it!!

Cheers
