Question About Population Register

Post by shakenvac » Thu Nov 03, 2005 8:05 pm

I'm a bit confused! from all that i've read here, i'm supposed to go down the population registrar in Albertinkatu and then get sent to Malmi etc etc so that eventually i get a population number - but when i got there today they told me there was basically no point in going to Malmi as i haven't got a job. I tried asking for more info but they weren't too helpful! They just said come back when i have an employment contract. They did give me the piece of paper i need to get my travel card, but apart from that i'm not too sure what to do next!

I have an interview tomorrow but if I don't get that does it mean i cant register?

Yes, no, true. You're EU right? You need to have the job before you will be "put in the domesday book" as in getting a residence permit by the police,

however you are now registered at the "domesday book" at the magistrate as a "temporary resident" of Helsinki. Once you go to Malmi and get your "card" you need to go back and show it to them to be registered as a "permanent resident" of Helsinki (technical bureaucratic BS, but the magistrate doesn't "see" the police database if someone has a Rp or not...)

Yes, I'm EU - Irish!

So, basically, I shouldn't bother going to Malmi until I get an employment contract? And then once I get my card from the police I go back to the magistrate to get registered?

Well I hope I get the job so!

Thanks for the reply! - ps, if I do have to go to Malmi, how do I get there from the main railway station?

Oh, just noticed off the VERO pages that you can save a trip to the magistrate as they now use "one slot" princitple.

So basically, you need not go to 3 places but just two, so you save a trip to Albertinkatu but you need to find the Tax Office anyhow...

I see from that article that to go to get the tax card i need to have the cert of registration from the police, and to get that, I need employment contract?! Im finally getting it now, that without having a job I cant register with any of the official offices.

In Ireland to get the PPS number (population number) all you need is a passport and thats it! its all sorted! Things are much more official here, but then thats what i expected!

Yeah, but you could show up and claim dole back in the days (or can you still?) and what I've read of the registration with the Garda it reads between the lines "you can but we rather you not come interrupt our tea".

Yay! I got the job! I can't believe it!

So, one last question (well, hopefully the last question anyway!) - when i get my contract, can i go straight to Malmi or should i first go back to the registration office? They've already given me the piece of paper that allowed me to get the travel card, so will this do or do i need something else from the maistraati before going to the police?

That was interesting about being able to apply for the tax card and the registration in one - i'll have to check that out at the tax office!

thanks for all the info, Hank!

Miracles happen, eh? If you have a number that has your birth date 11223344-999X and they say its your number then you got one. If it doesn't say you're a resident... hmmm... would need to see it. You go to Malmi anyhow (they don't need your number in principle) and then to the tax office. And remember to get the tax office paper to the payroll people before you get paid. Oh, and next year you'll get a tax card automatically and it'll be screwed up because they intelligently count your yearly incomes according to the previous years yearly income... so you might need to call them up then and ask for yoyr right withdrawal %.

PS now that you're happy, don't do Irish Yoga too much
