names in finnish?

Post by SIPULI » Tue Nov 08, 2005 10:24 pm

Well, I have really wanted to learn the finnish language for sometime now, and I was just wondering, do american names translate into finnish? not finnish words, but ways of saying them.

Example: in english, my name is steve. What would it be in finnish?

Most names have Latin or Greek origins, so they do translate.

For instance, Steve comes from the Greek name Stefanus, which translates into Finnish as Tahvo or Tapani, the latter being more common nowadays.

Well... if you mean whether there is a Finnish word that sounds the same as the name Steve, then the answer is... no, not even if you pronounce "Steve" like you would if it was a Finnish word :)

Your Finnish name, incidentally, might be Teuvo

Some American/English names might, of course, vaguely resemble some Finnish word. Can't think of any at the moment though... anyone?

Which reminds me of Stefanus Populus, the famous (or should I say notorious) Finnish singer, Tapani Kansa. Also known for his continuous efforts to break speeding records on Finnish highways

But yes, as Juha said, we do have quite a few names that share the same origin - largely because of the christian undertones (my own name is a variant of a Hebrew name actually). It's a bit of a mixed bag really. If you're interested in Finnish names, check out e.g. the following

Well, you would be saying your name is "stiiv" whereas you write it "steve" which is pronounced more or less like the highlighted syllables in'step' and 'vendort' put together - so you might want to learn how to hear your name because they'll call it out and your turn will go - and then learn how to say your name so people write it correct. Curse of the phonetics, I know.

If you insist on being "stiiv" you'll be mistaken for a Swedish "Stig" many a time

"Ken" ( a poetic word for "who?" ) as in "ken hän on, ken hän on, alla naamion?"

I ( though I am a Finn ) share my second name with Edgar Allan Poe.

Looks like my name is pretty unusual anywhere as it's not listed :?

The nearest I can find is:-

KARI (2)
Gender: Masculine
Usage: Finnish
Finnish form of Makarios (see MACARIO).

or

KARI (1)
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Norwegian
Norwegian form of KATHERINE

I wonder what possessed 'mor og far' to call me this?
Helvete också, nu regnar det igen!

"ley" would be pronounced like "lay" (although "lej" would be the Finnish spelling).

Ashley though would be written äshli(i) to sound like the English.

My mother's-in-law name doesn't appear on that website.. Tytti... I always found it to be so strange name considering my latin origins... another stange one is Yrjö, but it seems that it's the finnish way to say George!
