Hi - moving to Jyvaskyla
Hi to everybody there, I'm new member here, a french student who wants to fly to finland next year with erasmus.
This site really great. Many thanks to the mods
After that, here's some question I'm still wondering:
How is Jyvaskyla? (I would be there if I go)
Cost of life? (I read some topics but I still cant get a clear idea about how much will I need there: I would be alone)
I have more but here are the ones I care most.
thanks to all

Have you also found ....?
http://www.ranska.net
they have a forum like this in French.
Desolée have never been to Jyvaskyla, but I guess the prices are more or less the same as Paris (I'm from Ste Genevieve des Bois dans l'Essonne... et toi?)

Re: Hi
I loved Jyväskylä! It seems to me that living there was quite a bit less expensive than living in Helsinki. Both rent and food were less expensive. Drinking was about the same but the police were less tolerant of drunkeness than in Helsinki. Public transportation (the bus/trolley) wasn't needed because it was so easy to walk everywhere I wanted to go. The people were very friendly and easy to get along with.crems wrote:How is Jyvaskyla? LOL, I think 500e it pretty cheap.Helsinki is the 23rd most expensive city in the World, according to a late study. I'm a student in Helsinki and spend approx 500e per month to live (with the rent of 193e).
But of course crems is only looking for a place to stay? how much food will cost. and he wants to practice his english. Of course we need to know when will he fly, because if its in the summer and he wants to save money he could camp out. If its any other time he might want to stay at the local Hostel.
If you want cheap food you can buy a loaf of bread for approx. 2 € and some jam for another 2€ or less from the local Lidl store, which you are probably familiar with since Lidl is all over europe. Water is free just bring a cup and then if you want to splurge you can buy some Fruit and cheese, again prices will vary depending on when you want to visit.

Thanks for the correction,
I lived on bread, jam, cheese for 4 weeks when I lived in Paris. Of course Finland doesn't have the fresh baked baguette, that I subsisted on but they have plenty of other breads.
Its increadible what one can do when they are on a limited budget.

I think I'd need at least 700 to lead the normal life (considering the fact I'd have to pay the rent almost 200 and food and other stuff... and here with no food and no rent I get 350€ and it's far too little for everything....)
Und die jahre ziehen ins Land und wir trinken immer noch ohne Verstand...
thanks to the response
Well if i can i would stay for one student years (i think it's mid-august till mid june, right?) so if I can go there, I'll have to look for eveything:
rent, food, beers...
That's the biggest point cause I try to calculate how much will I need there.
Here as I live in my parents house (still!!) I only need 200€/month to live (car, food, gigs and party).
The flight wont be a problem as my parents can get ticket really cheaper than the normal price. The "problem" will be only when I'll be there. do you think that with 400€ per month (without the rent) I will be able to live decently?

Are you going for the JKL University? The international student office will help you re: accommodation. Ask for student flats and they'll tell you how to find/reserve one, I believe they've got an annual quota for Erasmus students in Kortepohja / Ristonmaa area and what have you. Rent shouldn't be a problem ie not very high that way. As a registered exchange student, you'll get cheap lunches at the student cafeterias. But check these things out directly from the university. (If you're going to the polytechnic, then I'm no expert but they have an international student office too...)crems wrote:Cost of life? Btw I studied there myself, at the Uni I mean Jive-äskylä is not a bad place at all. Depends... lots of international students annually, mostly Erasmus.
