Jagr was attacked
Jagr was attacked
In yesterday duel between Czech rep. and Finland was injured our the best hockey player. I think that Ruutu's attack wasn't correct and I think that Ruutu shouldn't play rest of the olympic games. Some your players are good for example: Selane, Lethinen, Jokinen and more...
Bytheway what do you think about Jagr's injury?

Re: Jagr was attacked
Jaromir Jagr is a great player and a great persona in the world of ice hockey, no doubt about it. He's the kind of larger-than-life player the audience wants to see.Eidi wrote: Bytheway what do you think about Jagr's injury?
But for some reason in the olympics he is using the model-Gretzky helmet, which is banned in the NHL. The gear doesn't provide proper protection for the player. So Jagr takes some blame for the injury too.
Ruutu does what he does. Jagr was holding the puck, put his head down, and wasn't prepared to take the hit. The hit looked clean to me, though admittedly Ruutu gathered unsportsmanlike speed before he nuked Jagr against the boards. The Chech game was completely derailed after Jagr was hauled off the ice.
End of story. A great victory for Finland!

It was a clean tackle compared to most. Ruutu is a bruiser though. Jagr had bad luck and his helmet crapped out.
I was more surprised how 'clean' the game was, I guess Jokinen has "grown up" as he used to be quite a hothead.
Oh man, I was at the local pub for the game, the whole place just mad when Koivu got out from the penalty booth and passed to Jokinen. Or then Selänne 30 seconds into the round...

That's possible. Ruutu is known for extremely stupid stunts in the Finnish Championship League. Funnily enough, when Ruutu carried the shirt of IFK Helsinki, Erkka Westerlund was the assistant coach of the same club. It has been widely rumoured that Ruutu was instructed by his coaches to take out star players from the opposing teams.Eidi wrote:But Ruutu's attack was wilful to Jagr.
No, I don't think the Czech team will win this time. Vokoun is not a winning goalie at the moment. In this kind of tournament you have to get your s*it together from game one.Eidi wrote:I have to say that Finlad played better than Czech Republic. Maybe we win the olympic gold!Who knows!
I heard the head coach of the Canadian team being interviewed and this tackle was mentioned.. (Ruutu Plays for Canadian NHL team Vancouver Canucks):nirva wrote:Sending players from the opposing team to the hospital is what Ruutu gets paid for, and ice hockey is all about hurting people. So what's the problem?
He said something along these lines,..Ruutu is a very committed player and he plays excatly the way he is instructed to play..He is supposed to be aggresive and physical, it is all part of the game of hockey at this world and olympic champions level.
Players at this level know what to expect.
When Jagr trapped with the puck against the boards he should have been expecting something along the lines of what happened.. but he was not prepared..The injury was unfortunate...but it could have been avoided.
To me it was close call but all thing taken into account, I suppose the ref made the right decision.
Eidi suggests. "that Ruutu shouldn't play rest of the olympic games"

That would mean that several other players would have to change their agressive style ..including a few Czech...
Fortunatley it looks a though Jagr will play in the next match.

J.Ruutu is the kind of player (if that's the right word here) who hits opponents whenever he can, without thinking of the consequences. He kneed Reichel out of the game a few years back. This time, the hit seemed to be more on the clean side - Jagr himself went into a very vulnerable position - but anybody with any kind of sportsmanship would have left it undone (or at least braked a bit). Ruutu is OK in the role he's been assigned, but isn't of much use otherwise. I wouldn't mind if he was kicked out of the team forever since there must be others who could do his job AND play a bit of ice hockey on the side, without involving in stupid and dangerous stuff.

I think Ruutu deserved the penalty he got, it wasn't very sportsmanlike but it is hockey. A shove would of been sufficient to take Jagr out of the play and then Ruutu would have gotten the puck and ......The greatest blame has to be placed on Jagr who had is head down like a minor leaguer and was just asking for it. If you play with your head down, YOU WILL GET HIT!!!!!!!!! That is hockey.

Ruutuu is very unpopular in Minnesota these days. In the last NHL game before the Olympic break, he went for Marian Gaborik (Slovakia + MN Wild) and knocked him out of the game (Ruutuu got 2 minutes for kneeing). Some thought Gaborik might miss the Olympics, but he has played and played well. Gaborik is a teammate of Mikko Koivu on the Minnesota Wild in the NHL. I would love to see Finland vs. Slovakia for the Gold. GO FINLAND!

I don't really like the way Jarkko Ruutu plays. As to that hit on Jagr, it was unneccessary hard (charching), but it his hands were on his side (not elboing), he didn't jump (like when you see in some over hard hits). Unfortunately Jagr was playing the puck and looking down, and didn't see Ruutu coming, and even went lower just before the hit. Match penalty was right thing to do.
Jagr uses Jofa -helmet, just like some old players in the 80's were allowed to play without helmet with a special permission, and on their own responsibility. The same Jofa helmet model was in wide use in the 70's, when I was a kid (though I didn't have one). Now when I think about that helmet, it's good at keeping your hair in tact. Why Jagr uses it? He's used to it, and it's very light and thin, does not block your view, etc. I'm sure Jagr would not be quite such a great player with a heavier, bigger, more clumpsy, and a lot safer helmet.
Esa Tikkanen was an annoyer in the 80's and 90's, but he was a great player as well, playing in Edmonton Oilers 80's super line with other Jofa -wearing players you have might heard of, Jari Kurri and Wayne Crezky. Jarkko Ruutu is sometimes compaired with Tikkanen, but it's a bad compairson. IMO, Tikkanen did his stunts (mostly babbling continuously that "TikTak" -langauge to opponents, compromising English, Finnish, Swedish, German and perhaps some Swahili too, who knows), but he wasn't a fighter at all, and didn't deliver cheap shots.
Though J. Ruutu is playing his role and helping his team, I like more players like his younger brother, Tuomo Ruutu.

Tikkanen's role was "wind-up merchant on ice". He was the one designated (though he took on the role with pleasure) to go out and tell the opposing forwards that he'd just shagged their daughter while the wife waited for her turn, and then the opposition bloke would attempt to smack him and get sent for a penalty.
