Wreck Diving in Finland

Post by kalmisto » Tue Mar 21, 2006 12:54 pm

"Diving wrecks around Britain will never be the same again for John Liddiard
- that's because he's been to the northern waterworld of Åland, where the wrecks are so astonishingly intact that he now knows
exactly what he's been missing. "

Got to confess that I first misread the title to say "Wreck driving in Finland"... thought, oh well, I think I've seen some of them on the roads :)

Time to join the AA (Analbhapetics Amonynous)...

I've never been diving in finland just because I've always heard there is poor vis and there's not too much in the way of colorful sealife, but it might be worth a shot to do some wreck diving. Have you done it here kalmisto?

I prefer diving in tropical waters, but I wanted to try ice diving here sometime.

No, I have not any diving experience at all. I read an article in Dyk ( a Scandinavian Dive magazine ) on wreck diving on Åland. The divers who had participated in the adventure were very enthusiastic about it and I mean VERY enthusiastic. Unfortunately the article is not available on the net but I found this instead :

http://www.goaland.net/se/article.asp?newsID=26449

The first passage reads : "A shipwreck dive in the waters of Åland takes you on an exciting journey back in time. Here diving is unique, nowhere else in the world are wrecks as big and well-preserved as here."

The latter statement was news to me. I started this wreck diving thread because i thought that someone might find it interesting.

The best Åland wrecks are probably Plus :

and Hindenburg : http://www.divealand.com/ukvrak.asp?wreckId=8

I wonder if that statement is true. If it is true, why is Åland not more known among wreck divers of the world ?

Well, it applies mainly to wooden wrecks as the Baltic is so low in salinity the teredo navalis does not like it here. Hence you can find something like the Wasa.
Cheers, Hank W.

Sukeltajat ry ( a diving club in Helsinki ) was established in 1976. Club members like to find and explore wrecks in The Gulf of Finland as well as caves and mines. This website is in English and Finnish:
