applying for citizenship in Swedish?

Post by phormion » Sun Apr 02, 2006 3:57 pm

Hi,

I've a friend who has a permanent residence permit in Finland. She works in this Swedish speaking kindergarten, so she learned Swedish quite OK, and now was going to try and take the citizenship exam. She doesn't have any Swedish family ties though - she's Romanian like me. The question was: does any of you people know whether she can take the language exam with Swedish, given her background?

I wouldn't imagine Finland would like to encourage people from abroad coming here to only learn Swedish; however, so far nobody has told her that she can't apply for the exam in that language.

Yes, Finland is an officially bilingual country, so passing a Swedish test is fulfilling the "language requirement".har nöjaktiga kunskaper i finska eller svenska språket eller motsvarande kunskaper i finskt teckenspråk. - third one accepted is Finnish sign language ;)
Cheers, Hank W.

How many tries are u allowed to take the exam? I heard about a verbal test too. ( I am asking for both Finnish and Swedish. requirements).

Is there a page where i can find the requirements ?
Thanx. I found the page here:
http://www.uvi.fi/download.asp?id=kansa ... C365CBA821}
From the http://www.uvi.fi page, select english and then go to the link on the left
for "publications" and then choose: Finnish citizenship by application".
Also more information about the language requirements under
"Language skills requirement in applications for Finnish citizenship".
