Canonball Run..Stavengar to Stockholm in 24hours....

Post by Cod » Wed May 17, 2006 12:05 am

..has anyone driven this trip before?

..because lifes a box of chocolates...were off the ferry at one end at 3:15pm and on the ferry at the other at 3pm the next day...thats around 1100km of road and two additional ferries somewhere in Norway...

..what I'm expecting someone to say is...'you do realise that ferry's in Norway (like the one that goes inland from Stavanger) are generally fully booked months in advance...but I'm hoping not...tough to check these things days before you move existance...its quite busy :)

Depends if you are sharing the driving and what sort of car.

I've driven the route in Winter, so the roads which cut through central Norway are closed then, you have to drive around the bottom of Norway... Stavanger - Kristainsand - Oslo - then on to Stockholm.

I'd say you need to allow at least 15 hours for the driving, not including pitstops. Points maybe worth attention.

Norway has very low speed limits, few passing places and hard to overtake the trucks.

Norway has a lot of fjords, hills, so the route is very winding and slow.
Oslo-Stavanger took us something 9-10 hours, but I did all the driving as my SO didn't drive until last year.

On the return leg Stav-Oslo, we knew we'd arrive in Stavanger in the night so we drove first to Kristiansand arriving perhaps 3a.m. stopped overnight in the Radisson there, which broke the journey into two more manageable halves.

Our car never had any problems, but some friends holidayed in Norway with their Ford Ka, they had to keep stopping to allow the brakes to cool as there were so many long hills to go up and down!

If the boat is the Jupiter you'll go on Newcastle - Stavanger, Color Line? It's a pretty awful boat, 20kT and was in a bad state of repair when we were on board.

Much nicer, and more conveneient is the DFDS Newcastle - Kristiansand - Gothenburg boat, IIRC it used to be about a 40kT boat, not as nice as the ones plying the Stockholm Helsinki route, but certainly better than the one running between Newcastle & Stavanger.

You could either put ashore in Kristiansand and drive Kristiansand - Oslo - Stockholm (10 hour drive?), or put ashore in Gothenburg and drive Gothenburg - Stockholm, takes about 5 hours to drive, but I think you spend then almost 2 full days on the boat from England.

The roads in Sweden are much, much better than the Norwegian roads, the difference is visible as soon as you cross the border.

I've made most of the permutations of England - Finland in both directions, I've also driven it the long way through mainland Europe, which is fun if you have the time to spare!

Feel free to PM or ask here if you want any more info!

..thanks for the tips

we had tried to book to Sweden (leaving this Sunday) but it's completely booked...so we got stuck on Fjord Line as the only alternative..

I hadn't thought about the hills (I've spent too long driving in south Europe!)...its a good point as I wouldn't want to hit those when I'm shattered (and my luck when its raining and dark!)...as it turns out we'll be passing throught Oslo around 2am so I imagine most of the hills will be well gone by then..

real shame as it would have nice to break the journey but we need to be in Helsinki on the 24th May for my wife's studies...

Did you also check the Harwich - Esbjerg (Denmark) ferry from England? Driving through Denmark is easy, mostly motorways. And the Öresundbron is cool to go across.

A quick check of Viamichelin shows I was spot on with my estimate for the Stavanger-Stockholm drive! :P

Esbjerg - Stockholm
Distance: 950km including 927km on motorways
Time: 10h13 including 09h45 on motorways
Toll costs: 60.39 EUR
Petrol costs: 56.98 EUR
Road tax cost: 0 EUR
Total costs: 117.37 EUR

Stavanger - Stockholm
Distance: 1042km including 278km on motorways
Time: 15h21 including 03h25 on motorways
Toll costs: 23.86 EUR
Petrol costs: 62.50 EUR
Road tax cost: 0 EUR
Total costs: 86.36 EUR

Have done that trip before bringing my car here. Actually it's an ok drive and you'll have plenty of time to take a break on the way. Since it is summer time you'll be able to drive through the mountians from Stavanger to Oslo which is very nice scenery go some Stavanger to Sirdal then to Setesdal and then onward to Oslo. This is not the neccesarly faster than the coast road but at least you will feel like you are driving instead of crawling (because of the speed limits and HUGE fines) along the coast.

..had a broken drill bit go through the tyre somewhere in the perma-frost plateau en-route to Oslo via the mountains...dang

..so drove 250km on a 'biscuit' to the next garage (well thats what we used to call the pathetic excuse for a tyre that you find in spare tyre bay of the boot)..in driving rain, fully loaded on narrow roads at 3am in the morning...

..so apart from two hours sleep, 1200km of road to Stockholm in 24 hours and the non-stop rain...and the drill bit...it was truly an awesome trip coming up highway 13 from Stavanger in Norway..wouldn't have missed it for the world - all the hype about New Zealand, why waste 24 hours plus jet lag when it seems Norway can run circles around NZ's south island...

..reckon we would have missed out going via Gotenberg (sp)...pleased the cookie crumbled as it did...

Good to hear you made it in one piece, the views are spectacular.

Pity you had to do it in 24 hours, it's really worth taking your time, as well as the spectacular lakes & mountains, there's a couple of decent things to see on that cross country Stavanger - Oslo route... if I remember right there's a wooden Viking church 8-900 years old can't remember the place name, closer to Oslo than Stavanger though & some pretty rapids I think it's at Kongsberg near Oslo.

That's not to mention the stuff in Stavanger itself (old town is similar to Rauma), then there's Prekestolen & Utstein Kloster plus Oslo with all it has to offer esp. the museums at Bygdøy.

Maybe on the return journey!
