OH MY GOD!! I was at Stockmann last night because I had to pick something up at the 'palvelupiste' and I have never, in my life, seen anything like what I saw in that department store yesterday!!! The aisles were so jammed up that they were not even moving at one point. People just standing in the aisles. It was horrible!!! It took me almost ½hour to get from the front door to the second floor!!!
I have never been a 'shopper' and don't understand the whole concept. There is no sale big enough or good enough to be able to drag me into that kind maelstrom. No I'll just pay full price ,thank you, if it's something I really need....
curses on HULLUT PÄIVÄT

What with ppl queuing up with their 'cheapy' Fruit of the Loom T-shirts and other non-standard Stockmann items that you only ever see at HPäivat?
I did see in Stockmann Tapiola a rather nice Creative Labs Subwoofer kit (and 6 satellites) for €69, which seems reasonable but I'm confidant I could find it at that price on MBnet too.

"Going to pop into Stockmans first!"...
" But it is Hullut päivät..you dont POP IN..!"
"I know, I have half an hour to get in..one hour fighting some bitch from Kaunianen for a Tee Shirt which is too small, then half an hour to get out...but it is hullut Päivät..you foreigners just dont understand our culture!"

Well...I suppose, as the saying goes (or something like this) 'to each his own'. I'm just glad that I don't feel that I have to participate in that aspect of Finnish culture...

Its a thing like swimming in the ice. Only barking mad people or tourists who don't know any better do it

Stockmanns is not for the weak at this time.
I suggest doing the 'chicken position' elbows sticking out as far as possible to get yourself some space. Shin pads never go amiss either!

Hullut Päivät was definitely insane! I could barely breath in that place it was so busy. The only good sale I could bear to stand in line for was vaniljapehmis for 1 euro! Yippee!

I bought a book at Akateemisen Hullut Päivät. But that was still € 30, so I wonder what the hullut was there...

I got some great deals at the sale, but it was crazy. After waiting 10 minutes for a change room to no avail, I decided just to buy the darn sweater and hope it fits. Turns out it did

Also got some funky tights! (Am wearing my striped orange, purple and wine coloured tights today in fact.) The only deadly people in the chicken position or using the "shove" technique, were the little old ladies! I noticed they were rough with those who were much taller or bigger than them, but they had mercy on the other tiny people. I rarely heard the word "anteeksi" at all
I agree though, it is a bit fun to go through the experience once a year. When you come out with your purchases you feel like you survived a battle! Roarrrrr!

Ah, haven't you been to helsinki long to know that "the little old ladies at stockmann" are the most vicious and second only to their rabid poodles... ask your class to explain what an "töölön mummo" is.

glad you survived without being whacked with an umbrella... that is if you take their seat in the tram

Cheers, Hank W.

best about the hullut päivä is to stand outside and watch people bursting out the door (mainly because somebody entered on the other side) ... it's like watching a building farting out marbles

The best thing I saw was last year. I was there to get a cheap ticket to Holland and was waiting for them to open the door at 8.00. There was a sh*tload of people waiting at the door, all too eager to get in and elbowing their way to the front. Until five minutes before opening when the camera crew from Yle1 took some shots from inside. The all of a sudden the people turned around and backed away.
They all wanted to be the first to get to the discount, but no one wanted their friends and relatives to see them pushing and elbowing to get inside to get to the cheaps.
Hypocrite and hilarious!
