I guess it depends which one you are applying for...

We got Finnish passports from the place next to the library in Iso Omena. Just needed ID, Kela cards, photos, some cash

We got British ones from the embassy. Just check out your embassy's website. Some embassies require that you register the baby's birth with them first, otherwise you need to get certified translations of the Finnish birth certificate. Your embassy will give you a list of certified translators.

But as a general rule, you get a baby's passport pretty much the same way you get your own.

You could also put your child on your own passport for a few years, that way you don´t need a picture of him/her thats going to change rapidly :!:
One less passport to forget and stops the nipper from escaping the country when your not looking.

I don't think this is possible any more within the EU. Might be wrong but IIRC when I got GB passports for my offspring it wasn't an option.

Thanks guys - will look into both options and update this post when we've made the passport.

Some additional questions:
1. Baby photos - can we use one that was taken at home with digital camera? Or do we need to use the photo booth which dispense black and white photos?

2. Hubby (a Finn) renewed his passport at the police station (at least while we were living in Central Finland). So, do we make our way to the nearest local police station for baby passport too?

3. How many years can we apply for the passport to be? And how much if you remember?

Thanks again.

Penelope was right about not being able to go on a british passport.
They can on a Finnish one though!
Also you can´t get a British one from the local nick!
I have a spare official British passport pack, with form and all the bumpf if you want to pvm me your address i´ll post it.
Also digi pic ok if 12oo dpi or better but you need at least 2 the same and no hats, dummies, toys,or you in the background.
enough info :?:

When I had Reino's first Finnish passport made he was only two months old so I had to hold him for the photo. I was told to wear a white shirt since the background needs to be white. A white blanket or sheet could probably be used if a white shirt isn't available.

This is the info I got from the police when I went to ask about this. The new biometric passports are coming in August. They'll be valid for 5 years. You can have your child on your passport in addition to your child having their own passport. The cost will be slightly higher than for the current passports. Only one photograph will be needed. If you apply now and get the 'old' passport then you can get one valid for 10 years and 2 photos needed. - Finnish passports.

Yes, my 3 lads have old style Finnish passports, valid for 10 years. We couldn't wait for the new ones because their old UK passports had expired and we were travelling to USA in February. IIRC, it only took a week or so to get the Finnish ones.

Öööh??? uusi valokuvaohje tulee pakolliseksi ja lapsia ei enää voi merkitä vanhempien passeihin.

So I'd say it is a definite can not.
Cheers, Hank W.
