Going to Finland

Post by .:Ashley:. » Tue Jun 06, 2006 9:21 pm

I'm not really sure if this is the place where I should post this but here goes nothing. I was wondering if anyone knew about any programs that I can go through that I could go to somewhere in Finland, prefably Helsinki, not necessaryly for school but so I can like do voulenteer work or something along those lines that would be nice if you have any information.
I know you don't care for a reason but I'll give you my reason I want to escape the states for the year. Well, I've been having a bit of a hard time getting over my brother's death that about about 2 years ago and on top of that my mom could possibly have cancer, her blood count is low, and I need a change of scenery and I would like to learn the finnish language. I thought that Finland would be a good choice to get away since not many people from where I'm from really know it exsist anyway, and since it seems like a pretty place...so if anyone can help it will be very much appreicated. Thank you.

Hi,

for me the combination "escape" and "going abroad for a year" sounds a bit dangerous. It's always quite stressful to move to a place with a different language and culture. There will definitely be times when you feel down, and then your brother's death/mother's cancer might come to the surface, you maybe notice that you haven't made any good friends in Finland who would give you support, the situation will be unbearable and all you want to do is to go home.

I'm not saying you shouldn't come, but you'll need to be a strong person in order to make it.

As for the volunteer work, I don't know of anything. I don't know how much of that stuff is done in Finland? And how the visa stuff work etc.

One of my friend was working in a such volunteer camp somewhere in the west coast, I have to ask her where she found that.
I wonder if CIMO has anything to do with it... at least they arrange many kinds of language-courses etc.

I just want to go for an "escape", I don't really have many close friends just one really, we have like kind of a long distance friendship, anyways and she's off to college in September. Like volunteer, something like that. Community service. Do you know any volunteer work I could do, something along the lines of music, maybe. If anyone knows let me know please and thank you.
