Freddyb wrote:Thanks for all the good advice. The "de justo" v "de facto" dillemma. Well Im still here in NY. I decided not to risk it. I have plenty of experience not getting what is legally mine so, I'm not taking the chance.

Also Finns tend to follow "the rules," percieved or otherwise, so I dont think my employer would allow me to work without proper documetation, regardless of the letter of the new aliens act.

Thank you again.
I can respect that, although I hope this was not influenced by Hank's ridiculous scaremongering.

Now at the risk of engaging in a bit of scaremongering of my own, there is one thing that you should appreciate: By failing to turn up for work on the agreed date you are giving your employer lawful grounds to terminate your employment contract and hire someone else instead. There will be no force majeure argument based on delays in the permit administration to support a claim for wrongful termination. In this sense the fact that you are a family member of an EU citizen and exempt from permit requirements can equally well count against you.

As you say over there - go figure.

Daryl, thanks for being an explanation of why Finnish employers find far easier not to deal with a foreigner...

I am sitting bleary-eyed in Anjalankoski, so I have arrived, like Beaujolais Nouveau but not as fruity! My "sticker" was conveniently awarded to me the day following my Flight?!!? Any conspiracy theorists out there?

Finnair did the right thing and didnt charge me to change my flight. Still a royal pain for both Soila and I.

Thanks again for the help!

Well, now you just need to remember to tie that balloon to your zipper and enjoy the Midsummer! 8)
